I'm putting together a little music quiz and part of it is guessing pop/rock/mainstream songs covered by extreme metal bands. I've only got a couple so far and I'm hoping you can suggest some more. It cannot be clean vocals since that makes it too easy. I'm looking for cookie monster/growl vocals. Thanks in advance!

Grave covered Them Bones by Alice in Chains. I played that album without knowing they covered that song, and when I first heard it it took me a couple seconds to figure it out, so I think that would be a good choice. The guitar solo totally gives it away though hehe

24.11.2009 - 21:09 Written by SerratedSyringe on 24.11.2009 at 05:03 I was gonna suggest that one! haha Dimmu Borgir - Metalheart (Accept cover) Dimmu Borgir - Burn in Hell (twisted Sister cover) Behemoth - Wish (NIN cover) Angelblake - Paint it Black (Rolling Stones cover) or was it Sympathy for the Devil? either way it was a Rolling Stones song... Six Feet Under has a whole album of nothing but covers. It's called Graveyard Classics...just pick a song lol Slayer - In A Godda Da Vida (Iron Butterfly cover) ...not exactly growling but it isn't crisp singing either.

I highly recomend the album The Anatomy Of... by Between The Buried And Me it is a whole album of covers. Also, someone mentioned In Flames before, but did not list their cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusions" which was also covered a few years ago by Disturbed.

There's a good one by Ensiferum.. They'd covered Lady in Black of Uriah Heep. Actually in my opinion it was somehow better than the original version. And also Fear Factory have done a very good cover of Killing Joke's Millenium. Fear Factory is good at covering songs.. Gary Numan's Car and Nirvana's School are two other good covers by them..

Sorry, my bad then... but it reminded me a situation when one guy tried to point on Mago De Oz "covering" (or even stealing) from Edguy with their "Manana Empieza Hoy", which is musically similar to Edguy's song Hymn...but the problem was, that Hymn is actually a cover of 70ties Ultra Vox work

Btw doing a search and Mike Oldfield never recorded it. Btw Thyrfing's cover is based on Gary Moore's version just like Nightwish based it on that one

Deicide recorded Deep Purple's Black Night, though with altered lyrics... Human did a version of Judas Priest's Breaking the Law but they're a pretty local band. Both Necrophobic and Stormlord did Iron Maiden's Moonchild. The Black Dahlia Murder and a bunch of similar bands did Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones. Death recorded KISS' God of Thunder, Mastodon covered Thin Lizzy's Emerald and Coroner did Jimi's Purple Haze and I Want You (She's So Heavy) by the Beatles, but I'm not sure how extreme these are. I thought Coroner also did a Cream cover but it seems I was mistaken. On top of Six Feet Under's Graveyard Classics covers albums, you can see the one by Entombed. Here the original artists aren't listed so maybe check it on http://www.metal-archives.com edit - of course, Gojira's great cover of Metallica's Escape which was listenable on their myspace last time I checked

You might wanna check the Cover It Up volume 1&2 albums. They both feature more or less metal bands doing poppy covers and you can deciede for yourself what fits into the cathegory you're looking for. I know a whole bunch of covers, but they're mainly done by non-extreme metal bands. And oh, Theatres Des Vampires did a remake on Kylie's Minogue Can't Get You Out Of My Head and re-named it Can't Get You Out Of My Grave and on Anima Noir they did a cover of The Cult's The Rain.
