Risk is crap. Here it is, I won't have to say it again. Dave Mustaine's jealousy of Metallica's succe$$ has blinded him. He has completely gone astray in his quest for radio broadcasting.
We all knew that the times of Megadeth playing speed-thrash were over since Countdown to Extinction, but hell, Youthanasia was a very good heavy metal album and Cryptic Writings contained great moments. Megadeth used to belong to the Big Four of Thrash, they don't have the right to release such a soup. You can expect that kind of album from a glam-rock band, but not from guys that have dominated metal genres all over the 90's.

In the liner notes of Risk, Mustaine claims that had this album been released with some other band's name on it, it would have been a success; yeah, that's not really the case. The same album by another name would be just as bad.

While not the worst thing Megadeth would put out, it isn't that far away from being so. While the change of direction isn't great, what gives this album its reputation is that most songs are just boring. If you want one song to sum up what's wrong with this record, then give "The Doctor Is Calling" a spin, a plodding meandering track that goes nowhere slow. This is a recurring theme for most of the album; "Prince of Darkness" mis-steps while trying to be atmospheric and comes off as cheesy and boring, before eventually picking up the pace. "Wanderlust" does have a good chorus and ends on a high note, but it feels like a chore to hang in there to get to that point.

since when "heaviness" makes "bad music" good?!!
at least this album has solos...and good music writing despite it's genre
"Ecstasy" and "Wanderlust" are my favorite from this album.

Ok. But I like "My World" from St. Anger. It is only one song from St. Anger, that i can say that it sounds "good heavy with some alternative". And guitar riffs are not bad. Many bands plays trash and many people think that "this album is good". A lot of trash riffs of many bands are boring. i do not like most of Megadeth's songs and music from past albums. And I do like Dave Mustain vocals.

Yeah...it's all personal taste...some people hate album "x" and some people likes it...it's just personal taste
but my point is you can't say an album is better than another one because it's heavy

I really love Breadline ... And it is true "heaviness" does not make a good album ... Sometimes dynamics make things heavier , as in King Crimson music for example...

While talking about "Risk" and "St. Anger" you should REALLY pay attention to the difference between trash and thrash...

This album is terrible... it's pointless debating what album is worse, this or St.Anger, both are ridiculously awful due to different (but equally shameful) reasons...

It was a painful experience listening to this album...

For as much scorn as this album gets, I actually love a lot of the songs on it. Yep, Dave Mustaine completely sold out with this one, as he was trying to gain a number one album and mainstream popularity. In spite of that however, I think the album judged on it's own, is actually for the most part, pretty good. "Seven" and "Time: The End" are totally boring songs, and definitely the ones I like least. (Though both are trumped by the awful "Losing My Senses" from TWNAH as my least liked Megs song! ) Another gripe I have is "Wanderlust"'s main riff and chorus sounding waaay too similar to ''Wanted Dead Or Alive" by Bon Jovi for my liking. I mean, you can sing "Im a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride...." along with the chorus, and it's a perfect fit! Regardless of that shameless rip off of a pop rock band, I still like the song.

The rest of the songs range from good to great, regardless of their genre. At least to me. Dave certainly deserves the scorn for selling out (even though he had actually been doing that with every album from "Countdown...." onwards) but the album, at least for the most part is musically good enough to outweigh, the dubious reasons for their creation. So yep, I like "Risk" quite a bit!

I have it and i like it too; I like it because i take it for what it is, surely there are some weak songs, I find I'll Be there to be Bon Jovi-esque, if it were bon jovi, i would probably be positively surprised, but it's unfortunately Megadeth. Crush'em has a Kiss - I was made for loving you vibe, but it's catchier than the flu in a rainy season . the rest of the album is ok with me, in small dozes.

I don't know about you guys but this is an exelent album, don't even compare st. anger to this one, never! St. Anger has moments that puts a guy to think "the guys who are playing this are really the metallica? (excluding the music st. anger, that one is really catchy i must admit, but the rest...:nono:)

I don't know about you guys but I like this album. It's a new way of Dave mustaine showing his feelings and he wanted something different than thrash. I think the songs are really cool, Ecstasy is my favorite. You guys only hate it because it's a megadeth album and you expect it to be heavy and fast. I think it's cool what dave and the guys did with the band. It went from pure Thrash metal (1985-1992), to Heavy metal (1994-1997), to Rock (1999), back to Heavy Metal (2001 and 2002) and then back to their thrash metal movements (2007-present). If you like Risk you're a true megadeth fan

By all standards, this is NOT a metal album. I'm not saying I hate it, but everytime I listen to a song on here I follow up with a song from Peace Sells or RiP.
Crush 'Em is a nice piece, though. Dave oughta Thrashify that song.

IMO, this album isn't as bad as everyone says it is, but it surely is nowhere near as good as KIMB, PSBWB, and RIP. I really like how this band is doing something different with their album, unlike Slayer has with any of their albums. This album has some songs I really enjoy, like Ecstacy, Breadline, Wanderlust, and I'll Be There, etc. Like I said before, these songs are nowhere near as good as their work in the 80s and early 90s, but still deserve some recognition. I haven't yet heard Time: The Beginning and The End and I am not sure if i am ever planning to.

As far as Risk goes, I feel it has some great tunes and harmonies that were spoiled by the fact that none of it was played on electric guitars. If Megadeth were to decide to redo the album with a (huge) injection of metal, i think it could well come out on MS with a 7.
Insomnia has a great riff and Prince Of Darkness is good the whole ay through, and on a personal note I really like 7.
Apart from The Doctor Is Calling, of course. That is a blatant rip-off of One and The Thing That Should Not Be. Not even subtle.
