In Flames are a massive band, which made A Sense Of Purpose three years ago a massive disappointment to a lot of people. Three years on with a new record label and a new album Sounds Of A Playground Fading, let's see what's going on.

The album title does little for confidence, but album number ten actually isn't as bad as the title would imply. This is the same In Flames as the last albums, but the quality of songs is a level higher. The album has some nice songs on it, especially at the front and back ends with "Deliver Us" and the lively "The Puzzle" from the beginning, and "A New Dawn" near the end. There are some nice hooks and melodies here, last track "Liberation" could easily be a metal cover of a pop song. For the most part of the album, In Flames do what they have been doing quite successfully recently, which is churning out incredibly modern-sounding metal for the masses.

Let's nip this in the bud: this ain't no Jester Race. But ain't no A Sense of Purpose either.

Take a few deep breaths, maybe think of a nice time you spent with girl/boy/horsefriend and gently let all your preconceptions slide off you, much in the same way those lovely girls who you watch mud wrestle slide all over each other on those lonely Friday nights... I'm sure I had a point, something about the new Morbid Angel? I can't really remember. Oh yeah, the new In Flames. It's really very not bad, plenty of thick leading harmonies harking back as far as Reroute To Remain do a plenty fine job of rekindling a little bit of the love you felt for these guys.

I want sth like Clayman, Whoracle, The Jester Race, or anything like that. But, I won't hope, because they probably won't go back to their older style.

They will definitely not go back to their old style. I had the honor to talk to them on occasion about their musical direction and how they respond to the gap between their older and newer fans. The answer was quite clear: they play what they like.

I just hope they will make a more creative album than the last pieces.

How can you know it will better when you never heard a single note of it?
Long live blind fanboyism.

Don't lie to yourselves, guys and gals, the downward spiral will continue. Unless, of course, someone can explain to me how Jesper leaving the band is a good thing for the songwriting. Old IF is dead and gone. Long live Dimension Zero!

Im pretty sure they'll come up with something different again. They have pretty much changed their style with every album. Not always a bad thing, but I keep my fingers crossed that it's not over the top so they start to drift towards some kind of collapse.

The downfall was when Anders started trying to sing. What it's become is almost gimmicky. Listen to A Sense of Purpose. Every single song has screaming during the verses, and harsh singing during the choruses. If anything, I hope they do away with that on this new album. I'm not too optimistic though because Jesper was my favorite thing about this band.

Are you insane!? A Sense Of Porpuse was an EXCELLENT album, maybe you don't like it because it has NOTHING to do with In Flames' beginnings, but it doesn't mean that it was bad, it has an excellent composition of songs and terrific riffs! I really don't know why most of the people started to rank In Flames really low since they changed their style, personally I like 'em more since that =)

If it's like Come Clarity I'll be extremely happy, but I thought A Sense of Purpose was pretty boring. What great songs from that session they did have weren't on the album, but instead the Mirror's Truth EP. I will also be very disappointed if this album is anything like Sountrack To Your Escape. Outside of two songs, I thought that album was complete and total rubbish.

I think we can safely rule out this album being like anything pre-STYE though. As much as I'm sure we all want another Clayman-esque album, just isn't gonna happen.

They couldn't have chosen a worse title. Maybe 'Sounds of a cat being dragged across the kitchen carpet' would fit well, or maybe something like 'The sound of an emo bashing a tablespoon against their forehead'. By the title i'd be surprised if this album had anything heavy at all. We'll see...
