Back in the early 70's, metal was just in its infancy, not yet able to walk on its own feet. For most of that decade, not much other than Black Sabbath were heavy enough to be called metal, but heavy music was still abound, at least by the decade's standard. Jethro Tull would end up snatching a Grammy from Metallica, but Aqualung finds a band that can write some heavy guitars, but their progressive rock is most of all whimsical, comical, vulgar, clever, and witty. The image of Ian Anderson standing on one leg playing flute is just as iconic as the riffs on "Cross-Eyed Mary" or "Aqualung". It's a fantastic album even regardless of its connections to metal, one of the best prog rock albums period, almost best Jethro Tull album, and released exactly 50 years ago today.

Pretty obvious classic album IMO. When you've got songs like "Aqualung", "Mother Goose" and "Locomotive Breath" (and "Lick Your Fingers Clean" from the bonuses) what else can I say than that this album has some of the most standout JT material.

Posts: 3333 Written by Redel on 27.07.2019 at 00:43 I kind of wouldn't want to say Thick As a Brick is overrated cuz it's pretty amazing, but IMO it's not a masterpiece people say. The album has some 10/10 moments: i.e. the first 10 minutes of part 1 definitely has some greatest JT music ever recorded. I can't say that that applies to the whole album and it damages the album more this way when you can't skip some weak songs in between. It's hard to say how much higher I would rate it if the parts were partitioned to smaller parts, but I'm sure it would rather be higher than lower rating. Then again, I am a simple man, hence I don't need me no album with a single concept and 20 min songs with lots of progression. Hencewhy it's Stand Up > any other JT album for me. Simply great songs, no unnecessary complexeties, no BULLSHITe.
