I guess this is the weirdest band I've heard in a long time, I thought Finntroll was a Black Metal band but after hearing Midnattens I really do not know which genre they are, a mixture of Black, Folk, even a slight spice of gothic Metal, and some other elements I can't describe. The album in execution (instruments) is quite average if you ask me, nothing really complex or outstanding, but that's only when you pay attention to just one instrument, the thing is that when you hear everything together sounds impressive, that is what makes Finntroll a different band actually, a lot of simple riffs combined with nice keyboards, which by the way is the most important instrument in this album (the keyboards pack Midnattens with all kind of atmospheres and incredible feelings), the bass-lines are not awesome or anything (in fact there are few songs where you can actually "hear" the bass-lines) and the drumming is ok, so when I say that what matters is the instruments combined I mean it. After listening to this album I fell in love with Finntroll's music so it holds a special meaning for me, even if I like their second album more. Crazy humppa metal!

I don't know what the heck these guys were smoking when they came up with this Finland-Swedish troll metal folk humppa thing, but I love it. I even bought the album when it was first released, it's still somewhere in my possession. In case you guys you don't know what "humppa" means, it's kind of traditional Finnish dance music with hectic "dumm-dah, dumm-dah" rhythmic pattern. In more modern slang people mostly use the word to describe something incredibly lame and boring. This is where the self-ironic humor of this band actually comes from.

Fun little album and for a debut it's a great introduction to the band. They had their identity clear from the get go which is most important. Unfortunately the songwriting is lacking a bit and the most memorable songs are for me Svartberg and Rivfader so the second half is kind of meh.
