I'm excited for this album! I saw Meshuggah perform live a couple years back and they were amazing.

Amazing album. So much more groove and excellent drumming all round, song writing is also a lot better.

Definitely better than Koloss...

Okay... 48 hours of "straight" "uninterrupted" listening to this album... even falling asleep with it in my ears... this is probably the most technical I've ever heard Meshuggah... dare I say... it's definitely in their best top two albums... what top two is totally up to the listener. You'll need to have a few listens to totally absorb what the fuck is going on... opening track (Clockworks) is a monster... and any other tracks on the album that don't impress you... eventually will. The order of songs on the album is perfect to where everything mesh well... this is up there with Obzen... possibly better...

This is what happens when robots make a metal album. These dudes can't be human. This is some next level shit. Probably their best yet IMO. Every track rips and stomps me into oblivion. Some fucked up, mathematical oblivion.

I haven't been able to get into this one, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of Meshuggah's earlier albums and EPs. Maybe I need to listen to this a few more times, but it's honestly a disappointment.

My favourite albums of Meshuggah are (and will be) ObZen and the EP "I". But this album is really solid.

Recorded live, amazing riffs, groovy and heavy as fuck, INCREDIBLE drums,...

Best album of 2016 by far.

It plods along without anything truly riveting happening. It's a shame how mediocre they've become.

I sat here for a while now trying to figure out to respond to this..I often do not respond to someone's "personal" opinion... I'd like to know , with absolute respect to your opinion" what exactly turned you off from this album... and in your opinion where does this rank in all Meshuggah releases. You have a pretty honest opinion in most of your album ratings so I'm sincerely asking from one "metal head" to another...

Maybe I need to listen to this a few more times.

That's also the reaction from general consensus.

Apparently, new Messhuggah start uplifting after gradual spins from listeners as initially they didn't quite get to the conclusion of the album. Saw some ratings on RYM, allmusic, or even on last.fm and all they signified the same thing.

Not true sir... just went on All Music and Last.Fm... no reviews... and on "Rate Your Music" it's has the highest rating in their discography... just fact checking...

Highest rating from a mere 100 ratings, compared to 1600 from Koloss and 2800 from obZen, both of which are the lowest scored albums after their debut. Can guarantee that this will plummet on there once more balanced ratings come in. There's also 0 reviews on RYM for it so don't know what Cynic is waffling on about; you can't extrapolate what people are thinking from a handful of reviews. There's no "general consensus" whatsoever.

... so don't know what Cynic is waffling on about...

So nothing new in that sense. It is, of course, his modus operandi.

I think posters missed reading "apparently" in my sentence. Again, that wasn't my final conclusion of "The Violent Sleep Of Reason" either.

I merely pointed out the trend of new record through some ratings which I've got upto now. Just for an e.g., if you check out last.fm listeners graph over here, you will see people started adapting album's perspicacity quite late( or it may be even more so after few spins) and same with RYM. Mind you, i'm not making the base of my comment from 2 sources i provided here, you could find lot of other links to see the current flow of "The Violent Sleep Of Reason".

Also, Joe comparing with other Meshuggah's records is unnecessary when he clearly knows the new record hasn't sunk yet.

Where's the graph you speak of? I see a graph indicating the listening activity in the last 6 months. That indicates nothing, nor is anything apparent other than that people starting scrobbling the band more when the new album was released.

Please explain the RYM extrapolation as well. I see nothing but 1 review (which doesn't support your notion) and 100 or so ratings which include no listening information.

I've listened to it a few more times. Lekiwi is 100% right. This just plods along. There are some awesome Meshuggah moments here and there, but none of these songs are even close to the same quality of the tracks on earlier records.

I also have no idea what Cynic is talking about.

Listening to it right now. It's a grower and needs more listens, but I like what I hear thus far. Some of my favorite songs are "Stifled," "By The Ton," "Clockworks," and the title track.

All the band is talented, but yes, they need to get out of their confort zone.
