Sons of Liberty is indeed a good CD. I hope that Schaffer will put al his patriotic thoughts in this projects and will get Iced Earth back to its early roots: dark technical US Power Metal!

@Hellish Star: totally agree on that. The Glorious Burden was a bit too patriotic for my liking

Something Wicked This Way Comes FTW. "Melancholy" song made me love that band.

03.12.2010 - 12:18 Written by tweetbombardier on 03.12.2010 at 08:59 Im a non-American, and I didnt find it distasteful... :\ In fact, I totally love the song "Valley Forge" which is one of the more patriotic songs on the album. But I think thats because you dont have to be American to relate to the lyrics and take something from them. I found the lyrics to the Gettysburg trilogy awesome. A history lesson set to great music is just the ticket for me. lol

I love "The Glorious Burden" album aswell even though it is quite patriotic. As Angelic Storm says, it is possible to take something from the lyrics even if you are not American. And, in addition, the work on the album is just awesome: every riff, every solo... and the voice of Ripper Owens!! I really think all these aspects make the album worth buying it.

I got into this band after hearing touched by the Crimson King, fucking awesome band.

How can the patriotic "The Glorious Burden" be any different to singing about Mythology and Great Warriors or Gods from different nations and cultures? The only real difference is that it is modern. I personally don't care much for lyrics, rather the theme. TGB was a great album for me with Hollow Man When the Eagle Cries and Declaration Day being the only really weak songs. I found it much better than the two Something Wicked releases which only had one or stand out songs each. I would also like IE to seek their Darker roots again.

14.12.2010 - 12:06 Written by Dark Cornatus on 14.12.2010 at 11:45 It's actually not that different, but some people find patriotic lyrics distasteful. I dunno why, its not as if Jon is suddenly some kind of nationalist right wing nut just because he displays love for his country. For me "Hollow Man" is the only track I really dislike from TGB. A small amount of other tracks aren't great, but I dont find them to be bad. Overall, I think its a very good album, and proved Iced Earth didnt need Matt to make a great album. As for the 2 latest albums about Set Abominae, I find "Framing Armageddon" to be easily the better of the 2. Its too long, and I didnt like the constant rehashing of riffs, but I find there to be much more good material on FA than I do on TCOM. In my opinion anyways, FA has about 7 songs (not including interludes) that are great. Whereas TCOM only has 2 or 3 that I really like. Id say half of FA is great stuff, whereas quite a bit less than half of TCOM is good. I think it's highly unlikely Jon will pen another NOTS or "Burnt Offerings" ever again, but it'd be awesome if he did. xD

15.12.2010 - 00:52 Written by Angelic Storm on 14.12.2010 at 12:06 Yeah i like TGB, when i say those songs were weak, i don't mean unlikeable, i definitely skip Hollow Man, but not always the other two i mentioned. I think Ripper did an awesome job on it. I'm the opposite with the two latest albums, but i haven't listened to them in awhile, so my thoughts may have changed. I liked the start of FA but it got boring. TCOM has a decent song every few songs for me.

I must say, Horror Show was their best album imo, that and Burnt Offerings were the only albums where the band as a whole stepped their game up (with the exception of Barlow cuz hes the best singer ever besides Christian Alvestam )

13.02.2011 - 14:56 Written by ViolentPrayers on 13.02.2011 at 09:32 I don't know why some people have Barlow in such high-esteem. To me, he's never been more than an average vocalist and he's never been the reason I listened to Iced Earth ( I don't listen to them anymore). He's not bad but, imo, he's only good, not great. And he sucks on TCOM.

13.02.2011 - 19:53 Written by Risto on 13.02.2011 at 18:07 I admit I find him better live (on "Alive In Athens", for example) than on studio. He often sounds boring on studio albums. But the same could be said about the whole band, imo. Even when I was an Iced Earth fan and owned all their studio albums, I rarely listened to them because I preferred to simply listen to "Alive In Athens". I think there's a matter of consistency into play here. The fact that Iced Earth had a change of vocalist with each new album in their early days and that production changed so much from one album to the next created consistency issues. Their studio discography is way too disjointed.

I'm listening to Something Wicked right now and have no idea what you guys are talking about when you say this band has low energy in the studio. Damn! Especially the Something Wicked trilogy at the end of this album... some of the most intense power metal released that decade. Melts my face. About the link to Jon speaking on Fox News. Yeah...

14.02.2011 - 03:34 Written by Susan on 14.02.2011 at 02:01 It depends on songs. Talking precisely of SWTWC, apart from the trilogy at the end, this album has one heavy song, one soft song, one heavy song then one soft song mostly. Songs 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 are soft, if I remember well. It depends on what you're used to in terms of metal music. Don't take it as a snide comment, it is not, but checking the bands listed on your profile, I understand why you think an album like that is intense. You're used to a kind of metal that is quite soft for me. It is relative and must be put into context.

14.02.2011 - 04:29 Written by RavenKing on 14.02.2011 at 03:34 You're mistaking the words "high energy" with "fast and heavy." Two totally different concepts. Yeah, Something Wicked has lots of slower and mid paced tracks, but they're done with high energy. I don't understand people who think that album has low energy! Damn, I thought it was terribly obvious that a band needs the same high energy to do ballads and slower stuff as they would for fast songs. You can have an album full of high tempo songs or an hour of blast beats but if you're doing so with low energy you're going to put everyone to sleep. Duh...?

14.02.2011 - 14:09 Written by Susan on 14.02.2011 at 04:29 I know all this. Lots of Black Metal bands I'm listening to have slow parts/songs. However, they're much more intense than Iced Earth's slow songs. The slow songs of Iced Earth are sleep-inducing, Imo, and I feel the urge to push the skip button. Usually, fast and heavy helps, as for energy. Though there are very fast bands I find utterly boring (1349, Marduk, Dark Funeral, for example). However, I would not say I find them boring because of a lack of energy but simply because I don't like their sound, vocals, etc..
