I don't understand why people regard it as so mind blowing.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you don't like doom metal in general.

This stuff's ok but I don't understand why people regard it as so mind blowing.
It plods along in bits and I always found the guitar sound a bit gutless for what it was trying to do
EDIT: Just dawned to me that maybe people love it cause a certain fellow called Lars does vocals on it.
This release definitely doesn't "plod along", or at least not in my eyes. What you may see as meandering, many see as building atmosphere or even tension. Also, I love this album, and I find pretty much everything else Mikael Akerfeldt ("Lars") does horribly boring/overrated, so that's a pretty shitty argument.

Yeah I think the Akerfeldt accusation is pretty off imo. Fairly sure this would be as liked had it been done by another vocalist (who sounded the same), but resorting to weak and throwaway "analyses" like that as a way of explanation highlights a sizeable gap in the OP's knowledge and ability to reason using appropriate understanding.
And as mz pointed out, if you don't like doom and the genre concepts behind it you aren't going to like this, so I don't understand the incredulousness of the original comment, unless the OP wants to expand on what he thinks people think they want from doom in general (because doom never plods along, does it...).
Now excuse me while I arbitrarily wander into a power metal album thread and exclaim my lack of understanding as to why people find said album so good.

Completely true. As much as I love controversy and arguments, I don't see the value of going to a page for a highly-regarded album in its' field to belittle it despite having no interest in the genre.

Written by deadone on 14.04.2014 at 01:49 I don't understand why people even bother with forums if they can't hack opinion's other than their own.
I think people are taking issue with the fact that you made (incorrect) assumptions about why this album is highly regarded. The way you critiqued it made it seem like you probably don't enjoy or have much experience with doom, so while your assumptions might be worth arguing I think most people here should ultimately take what you have to say with a grain of salt. That's how I see it anyway.

In other words, and by deadone's own token about not being able to hack other's opinions, people shouldn't get pissy when they get called out on their bullshit generalisations which attempt to reduce people's tastes to total fanboyism, instead of actually trying to engage with the topic at hand on at least a reasonable level Your apparent lack of understanding of the genre led swiftly to your only recourse, which was to basically attack everyone else's tastes. It was a lame comment, devoid of any real insight. If you don't like being told that then don't comment, and certainly don't play the victim card.

And why don't you go and attack people ala Lit. etc who do the same?
At least I don't tell him to fuck off when he berates some album or genre I like.
Because...
a) I like this album, and I don't bash bands/albums/genres I don't listen to. When I hate something (or some one in your case), I usually have a valid reason to. I don't give out low scores to albums just cause I want to be hipster-level different or stir up controversy for no real reason then, as Joe says, "play the victim card."
b) Compared to you, people actually like me (or at least tolerate, which is also good).

Cause we all have to have the same opinion and spend our days sucking up each other arses?
I don't understand why people even bother with forums if they can't hack opinion's other than their own.
I don't like this album and don't understand the appeal.

Let me see if you can understand this. You comment on an album page and question why anyone would enjoy it, and then state that it's probably simply because of one certain member who happens to have a successful career in a different band, essentially de-validating everyone's opinions. I would have no issue with you criticizing albums and bands if you simply stuck to the musical aspects, but you always feel the need to throw some bullshit into the mix to cause controversy. I'm sorry if I offended you, but unfortunately, you offended me when you stated that the only reason anyone would enjoy this album is because of Akerfeldt.
Edit: I'm also sorry that this seems to have turned into a "deadone" bashing thread, we should get back on the topic of this brilliant album

That goes to Still Life as it features the best growls I've ever heard. This one also has excellent vocals. though.

To be honest. I think that Still Life is forgetable. Is not even the best Opeth album. The best vocals in Opeth are in Morningrise without a doubt.

Can't agree at all. To me Morning Rise and Still Life are equally good. They are imo their best works but in the end I think Morningrise isn't as well written and meanders around a lot.

It's ok but nothing special for me. Don't know really why. Their debut is much better for some reason.

So this album is already 20 years old...
Very few times I find music that is capable of making me feel miserable. The music in this album belongs to that kind.

Nah, I'd say productionwise it's superior to Still Life as it feels much more organic and "wild" (Karma comes to mind)... But the songwriting is much stronger and unique on Still Life imo. The difference in quality are extremely small in those albums though... So I'm basically splitting hairs here.

It's been a while since I've listened to this album (I used to all the time), and after being away from this band for so long, coming back I can enjoy their work even more. This album is easily their best and is absolutely beautiful.

Love this album, but bespite being ripped by miself from a vinyl, the audio is just muddied, distant and low volume just like on the source. The remaster allowed me like it even more as now i can listen to it properly, its sound clear and has a decent volume, im so happy

Usually, I do not recommend bands or albums without being asked, but Greek's very own Mistveil is just too good to be ignored.
Their debut album Amnesia is a must-have for fans of Katatonia's first two albums.

There some moments on this album where it is shocking how much Katatonia is copying Paradise Lost. genarally it is a good album..
If you mean those monotonous, minimalist riffs that abound on this album, I wouldn't say calling it a copy is the case. Not even Paradise Lost himself exploited this resource enough. I think Katatonia had a lot of guts to make something so risky. And that's exactly what makes this album so special.

I like the growls, and the guitar tone is great, but other than that, the album bored the pants off me, I've tried many times to get into it, but the atmosphere does nothing for me, and leaves me emotionless, and the riffs dragged on too long, and were just plain dull imo. "Brave", and "Rainroom" are proberbly my favourite songs on the album, but are still nothing special to me, maybe Katatonia are not for me?

your opinion is quite negative but your rating is still high. I'd expected a low rating based on what you wrote there.
