The Big 4... of British Heavy Metal

My first thought is Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead and Saxon. But some of these emerged much earlier than others and the Thrash Big 4, so what other bands emerged a bit later (80's as opposed to 70's) that could be considered part of the Big 4 of British Heavy Metal?
Maybe we can make a definitive MetalStorm decision?
*Sorry if something like this has been posted before, it probably has, but I tried the search function and couldn't find anything.

I'd exclude Sabbath. The big 4: Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Saxon

If The Big 4 counts after album sales, the list would look like this I guess (considering you think of Led Zep and Def Leppard as Heavy Metal): Led Zeppelin Iron Maiden Def Leppard Black Sabbath My personal list would be: Iron Maiden Black Sabbath Judas Priest Motörhead ...considering they've all had a huge influence and are still active, making albums and out on tours.

12.01.2012 - 19:51 Written by [user id=115824] on 12.01.2012 at 19:43 The thread is called "The BIG 4 of British heavy Metal" just like there is the big four of thrash which consists of the the at the time BIGGESDT thrash bands, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax. Saying Havok should be part of that is as ludicrous as saying Raven and Angel Witch are amongst the biggest 4 english heavy metal bands.

12.08.2014 - 03:03 Written by Warman on 12.01.2012 at 16:19 Tough sale. Led Zeppelin and Def Leppard certainly have heavy metal elements, but its not as clear cut as in the case of Iron Maiden, Priest, and Mottorhead. I think a better question would be who are the Big 4 of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. In this case its a very easy list: 1. Iron Maiden 2. Judas Priest (pre-dated NWOBHM but embraced the style) 3. Mottorhead 4. Saxon

If all metal genres then I would go with: Carcass Napalm Death Judas Priest Venom Just the NWOBHM bands then: Judas Priest Venom Iron Maiden Motorhead
