I watched the show before I knew it was based on books but few months ago I started to read the first book (haven't had the chance to read anything besides study materials ever since) and I guess I'm glad I already knew what all characters look like. anyway, recently I spotted the other four books in a bookstore and I think I'll make an exception and buy them (I rarely buy fiction books as I just read them once and then put away, so what's the point of that?)... winter's the coolest season for reading books.

plus, if one's worrying about the language... well, um, practice makes perfect, right? reading books is one of the best ways how to improve your knowledge in any language.

Got through season 1 of Rick and Morty. My type of show. Just the premise inherently gives the makers so much creative freedom. 'Why does X exist?' 'Different planet LULZ'...'genius scientist LULZ.' Though they do try to explain how some of the gadgets and time/world travel work. How feasible the explanation is, I dunno. I love how preternatural and outlandish the art is. They managed to make Morty's voice whiny but not annoying. According to the IMDB ratings, Season 2 is even better. *crosses fingers*

I rinsed both series in a couple of days and I've thought about it every day since finishing it. I think that and Peep Show (which I watched just before new years) have jumped up to the top of my fave shows.

Aside from the fact Rick and Morty is hilarious, amazing to look at and quite unique, I also find Rick's character one of the most interesting characters I've seen in a long time. It's hard to explain, but his whole existentialist / nihilist / absurdist personality is probably one of the most identifiable personalities I've seen in a while. Obviously he's totally ridiculous and OTT, but I think he's probably closer to real life than almost anyone else on screen. I think if people were a bit more honest with themselves they would realise that most people are hedonistic, selfish and will use people for their own gain, but also know that it all doesn't really matter at the end of the day, as we're all fairly inconsequential in a bigger picture, so might as well just do it anyway and bugger the consequences. Not very well explained; I'm not well versed in philosophy and psychology, but I sort of get it, I think. I find the show more emotionally engaging as a result, which is not something I'm used to.

Not sure if I would say season 2 is better, but it's probably just as good. There was only one episode I wasn't overly keen on as it went a bit too far with the ulra-violence.

Rick And Morty also has a lot of improvisation, which makes it even more interesting. There's one episode especially in the first season (and one copying that format in the second season) that is probably about 80% improvised.
Definitely my favorite animated series of all time, if not favorite series in general.

Would that be the alternative reality TV shows by any chance? Those are brilliant.

Yep, in an interview with Justin Roiland (the voice of Rick, Morty, and most other characters) he said he was just in a recording booth drinking beer and saying the most random shit he could come up with and then they put the best bits in the episode. They tried to do it again in season 2 but I didn't really think it worked as well that time around, probably the only R&M episode I didn't fully enjoy.

Btw, which episode were you referring to when you said "There was only one episode I wasn't overly keen on as it went a bit too far with the ulra-violence." Was it the "Purge" one?

Yeah, the whole prosthetic penis one wasn't that great tbh.

It was the Purging one. Just felt a bit Family Guy-ish because of the constant violence. I probably still wouldn't skip it though. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x37yoyr

Still better than most Family Guy though. (not that I mind the odd Family Guy)

Aye, not the best episode, though I still enjoyed it a lot. Not all that familiar with Family Guy, I saw a few episodes, but don't remember that much violence to be honest.

Maybe not just violence in the case of Family Guy, more like just relying on superficial elements that don't really add up to much in the end. Rick and Morty feels like everything is related to the story or characters, whereas Family Guy can often just be a collection of disjointed jokes, one-liners, physical comedy, violence etc. with a kind of plot wrapped around it. R & M just has some amazing highs; the Cronenbergian one; the Mr. Meeseeks one; the Total Rickall one and so on. To be honest the majority of the episodes are incredible, so a few that don't quite live up to that is to be expected.

Yeah, I do remember Family Guy being quite disjointed.
Agreed about Rick and Morty. When I first watched the show I basically had that "I've been looking for you my whole life" feeling. Every episode blew me away and I would watch it multiple times before the next came out. I've never done that with other series, usually I just wait for a whole season to air and binge it, but I couldn't resist that long in this case. And the Total Rickall episode... Man. Simply amazing. Heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time. And that goes for the whole show actually. And what you said about Rick's character is absolutely the case. I never expected the show to be any kind of "deep" before watching it.

Yeah I don't often gets "feels" from tv (though actually the older I get the more I do) but it definitely hits a vein from time to time. Roll on season 3 which hopefully won't be too far off now. I think I may do another run through though, probably very soon.

There is this Rick And Morty Pokémon parody game that is doing a pretty shitty job at tiding me over until season 3, but I may have to mess with the space-time continuum to avoid going completely insane. I'm also pretty pissed off that I couldn't take part in their recent contest where one winner would get to voice an alien overlord in an upcoming episode if they donated 10$ to an AIDS-related charity. Belgians were excluded for some reason

Sens8 was an interesting concept, some characters i like more than others, but just felt like far too much time was dumped into who was fucking who.

Just finished Gotham, enjoyed it. not a DC or Batman guy, always read Marvel growing up, but liked the way the character of the Penguin evolved.

It has somehow the same forced feeling that Flashforward had. One can really FEEL it's trying too hard...

I have began the "real" Sherlock Holmes tv series now, the one with Jeremy Brett. First episode in, so far so good. Well made and well paced.

i guess it's due to the shortsighted nature of tv execs now. gotta push it hard to draw in an audience or, like FF, it will get canceled.

Finally picked up the first season of Game of Thrones from the library. I don't get it. The first episode was face-palming embarassing. Their blatant attempt to make the show seem "mature" and "gritty" but rubbing nice racks in our faces, cutting heads and saying "fuck" was reminiscent of the train-wrecks Rome and Deadwood. Most of the characters had no charisma and did not get enough screen time (with their pants on) to develop or even introduce them. I was very disappointed after the first episode.

However, it did get better as it progressed. A few interesting characters emerged - Tyrion, Cersei, lord Varys - and I can't deny the story has a good dynamic with the threat from beyond the wall framing the internal power struggles. It would make a great role-playing campaign. Gonna watch the rest of it, no doubt, but it's nowhere near the best shows I've seen. I know the grimdark is part of its appeal, but it's actually harder to take it seriously than, say, Buffy or Farscape.

I like GoT for the fact that it's not just other show where the good guys pass through a lot of troubles and in the end win and the male and female protagonists kiss and everything turns all right.
In fact there's a lot of unexpected stuff. Unexpect makes it interesting.

(That's one of the reasons I prefer anime over american shows as well :3)

To be honest I find GoT together with The Walking Dead and Deadwood THE most overrated tv series ever. They are enjoyable (except for TWD which is too preposterous for words) but nothing more.

I like Walking Dead, some episodes more than others. Preposterous? Sure. It's centered around a zombie epidemic ffs.

Only watched the first season of Game Of Thrones... seems it, Rome and a lot of others follow the Sopranos Cable route. Tits and f-bombs ahoy. Same concept switched to differing backgrounds. Will watch more if I can.

sadly Netflix have finally "outfoxed" my VPN so no more US/Canuck/Dutch/Brit/Spanish/Hong Kong Netflix access for me... just PY.

GOT

I watched the first season of GOT when it got out, and told myself "is that all ?" - so I stopped caring about it until S3 came out and watched what I missed. It gets much better later on story wise. The first season is just a prelude basically. By mid season 2, season 3 you begin to see the big picture.

And about the racks, indeed, and it's called sexposition even... the nudity is exagerated according to a LOT of people. In fact, some of the cast members even use nude doubles and made it clear in their contracts etc.

Well I am watching Modern Family now after trying The Office US version which isn't half as good as the UK version. Also started Justified, Ash vs Evil Dead and also watching the currently airing seasons of The Flash, The Blacklist, Better Call Saul, American Crime Story & 11 22 63.

The Jinx: The Life And Death Of Robert Durst was pretty awesome too so picked up Making A Murderer now.

Oh and also just wanted to mention this: Better Call Saul S1 > Breaking Bad any season.

fucking Netflix wised up to my VPN so having to use a site to watch whatever feels like working without buffering every several seconds when I want something more than the limited programming PY/Argentina get.

Modern Family last season with the wife.

Also doing Ash vs Evil Dead in my time. Enjoying it, always great to see Bruce Campbell.

on BCS season two. Preferred Breaking Bad.

and revisiting Robotech. Finished Macross Saga, slogging through Robotech Masters before the Invid.
