Having gone from a black/doom, Gothic-era Paradise Lost worshipping act to a more streamlined, goth/darkwave/shoegazer influenced proposition, Tonight's Decision, the band's fourth album and first for Peaceville records, features the band expanding and evolving further while still retaining their trademark melancholia and fixation with simplistic yet trance inducing songwriting.

I dunno, their alt-rock stuff wasn't too shabby, but there were some moments where I seriously questioned what I was listening to. Not because of the band name attached to the music, but because sometimes the music sounded incredibly banal. Borderline radio rock sometimes if the atmosphere doesn't work for you, which it doesn't for me. Their 2009 release (can't even remember the name and too lazy to search) was especially bad.

You probably mean their latest Night Is The New Day,w hich I haven't heard so I can't comment. I personally love their alt/rock/goth/metal/whatever they have done since Discouraged Ones but this album is the least favorite, would give it barely a flat 7,0.
Their best works in this style have always been Discouraged Ones and Viva Emptiness imo. Love the production of the former one.

Ya, that's the one. DID NOT LIKE.

I didn't mind Discouraged Ones, but I wouldn't give it anything higher than a low 7 myself. Everything else in that style just fails to impress me.

Their 2009 release was especially bad.

And to think that "Night Is The New Day" is among the best 10-20 albums I've ever heard...

if that's the case it means you only heard 10-20 albums in your entire life

Night Is The New Days is by far Katatonia's worst album, it is so immensely sleep inducing boring zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I seem to be extremely isolated in this opinion, but I find Viva their absolute weakest (5 good tracks, 8 crappy ones), and NITND their best since the excellent Discouraged Ones.

This one is also killer, although I could live without that cover.

There's no fucking way that Night is the new way is better that albums like Viva or Last deal... From the tracks I've heard even The Great Cold Distance is superior.

I actually took the time to get to know Night... and found it was a decent record, albeit a different approach to the others, so you aren't alone in liking it Kenos but Viva is definitely the best post Brave record.

For me it's a tie between Discouraged Ones and Viva Emptiness as the best Post-brave record.

You're literally the first person I ever heard say that Viva is their weakest, which I agree with.
I don't, however, agree that it's really great. Quite the contrary.

Array has weird opinions on a lot of stuff. You only have to look at some of the awesome albums he's scored low points to see that

Aye.
I almost took the 4 he gave to Mourning Sun as a personal insult, seeing as how that and PL's Draconian Times are the best goth rock albums currently in existence.

EDIT: Just noticed your rating of the mentioned album isn't particularly in concordance with my tastes either.

I gave that rating out pretty much when it was released as I felt it had nothing that made Elizium so great. There was a bit of expectation behind it so the score for that record might not be as harsh as it currently is were I to listen to it again.

Mourning Sun = Elizium on steroids, IMO.
It's everything Elizium should have been, but wasn't. And Elizium itself was already damn brilliant.

I'll give the album another go. Currently all I remember from the era is McCoy's bizarre black wedding attire he wore in interviews.

This seems to be their most accessible album, in the way that each and every song is so damn catchy you would find yourself humming along to every song in the shower. Such beautifully handled tunes as 'I am Nothing' and 'In Death, A song' create a sinister enough atmosphere, and when the band deviate from the 'norm' as on the acoustic led 'A Darkness Coming' and the powerful closer 'Black Session', it sounds even better. The only reason that i didn't give this a higher rating was because the songs in the first half sound strangely similar to one another, but as an album it all flows so well.

This is a good release. It took more times than any other Katatonia album for me to really "get into", but it has certainly grown to be a damn awesome album in my eyes. I still think "Had To (Leave)" is one of the weaker Katatonia tracks, but that's not saying much, since I love basically everything this band has done.

You're not the only one though. In my opinion Night Is The New Day is their best album to date. And Viva Emptiness is my least favorite from the 2000s era. However I do agree that the ambiance and style from NIght Is The New Day is really hard to capture live, they really lack something compared to their more suitable live tracks. But studio wise it's amazing.

This was a disappointing album really, it's ok in parts, but for most part it's simply boring tbh. It's not a shadow of the releases they did before this.
