Surprised this one rates higher than In Their Darkened Shrines.
It's good but In Their Darkened Shrines is brilliant.
Probably has something to do with a majority of people preferring more straight forward death metal to more "progressive" forms of Death metal.
(I agree ITDS is their best)

I used to think this was their best album. Nowadays I feel that In Their Darkened Shrines is their best album, with this album coming in second.
I think it's also because of the change in sound George Kollias brought to the band with more no-holds-barred, blitzkrieg drumming. Which is good, but as you said, ITDS is much better. Tony Laureano's a better drummer all around too, better manipulation of tempo. But in part that's understandable, because he's been in a much greater variety of bands than has Kollias.

I actually like this one better because of the production. The others are good, but I can't stand the production.

Their style did change a little with the addition of Kollias. As Che noted, they became more blast-centric than before, and ultimately a little more straight forward than they were on ITDS. When I said progressive, I didn't mean literally progressive death metal as in Obscura/Beyond Creation type stuff, I mean progressive as in not just straight forward death metal. The style of ITDS is more progressive in that it shows more variety/variation in the songs, it showcases more attention to atmospheric detail and creating that vibe of being in ancient Egypt. Whereas their albums since have typically have had more emphasis on their death metal parts than their ancient Egyptian atmosphere parts. Can probably blame that on both Kollias' addition and Karl feeling the need to release solo material that focuses strictly on ancient Egyptian folk music which likely channels much of his ability to create an ancient Egyptian atmosphere away from Nile.
@Rulatore The production is part of what made ITDS such a great album. It wouldn't work nearly as well with cleaner production.

I disagree - while I enjoy raw production most of the time, I think that album could have benefited from a little more polish. Not like modern day tech-death polish, but maybe just a bit of sheen to give it some weight.

Certainly a rather ironic situation, as I usually prefer polished production far in favor of raw production, but this is one of the few albums where my preference is polarized.

Of course it goes down after the second track, "Cast Down The Heretic" is one of the best songs Nile has ever written. I would obviously not go to the extent of saying the rest is abysmal though.

Yes, luckily it didn't reach the bottom, so I rated 4 instead of 1 :-)

Well, your rating is your business. But did you pay attention until the end? Because "Lashed To The Slave Stick" is a great song, and "Annihilation Of The Wicked" as well.

Yes," Lashed..."was the only better track next to the 2nd and 3rd, the rest all dumb.

I don't mind if they don't. I'm fine with having just this one to cherish and a couple others to like.

I think To Whom The Gods Detest is the only thing that comes closest to this record. It's the only other Nile album I appreciate as much as Annihilation, at least.

Still their pinnacle by far that album.

Very good album and I think that the song "Lashed to the Slave Stick" is the only technical death metal song that I've had stuck in my head like a pop song. Very catchy.

While I prefer its predecessor and think the production there fits the music perfectly, I have to commend the production on Annihilation Of The Wicked. It's one of the finest in all of metal, especially the extreme side.

For me it's Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. All of the first three are great though.

Cast Down the Heretic is so brutal and addicting!
Edit: I dare say my favorite Nile songs are the killer double-punch closer of "Annihilation of the Wicked" and "Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten"
