17 years have passed since the last Carcass album. In the meantime, the band suffered a lot of problems: 11 years of inactivity, health issues, changes in musical direction for most members, etc. Finally, in 2013 they are back in form with Surgical Steel. The new album is closer to Heartwork compared to the other Carcass albums, which is surely a good thing as Heartwork is one of the best and most important (melodic) death metal albums ever made.

Nothing wrong with the production here, in my opinion. Not entirely sure where that complaint is stemming from. It's not a reasonable expectation to expect another Necroticism or Heartwork... therefore, in the context the album was released in, it's just fine and it hits the spot. Carcass hasn't released an album in 17 years... Kudos to the boys for writing a non-shitty and non-embarrassing album, unlike some other metal comeback-albums in recent years.

he has nothing to do with this album. And why would you be worried about him not playing on here or writing songs?
What I regard as their best album doesn't feature him anyways, so...
And it's him that turned Carcass into a a much weaker band with Heartworks

Jeff Walker addressed that subject in a recent interview, and he said that people give Mike Amott too much credit (or wrongly apportion blame to him, depending on your views on Carcass' post-Symphonies material) for the changes to Carcass' sound on Necroticism, and especially Heartwork...

Only songs that stand out for me are the melodic guitar intro and the interesting final track. Pretty solid comeback though.

One of best albums I've heard recently. Especially this is "old" band coming from my childhood times. Now Carcass sounds even better - there is everything: power, aggression, a bit of madness and even melodic guitars. Bravo! Track I like the most is The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills and the way numbers are shouted in the refrain is killing me...

Probably because Carcass decided to play it safe and release an album with what is probably the most popular version of their sound, I agree with you though that this album is pretty boring. To me it sounds like a poorer version of Heartwork and I'm not a fan of that record.

I kind of enjoyed this album. Though, I must admit that my expectations were pretty high, and "Surgical Steel" didn't meet them.
I think that Carcass tried to make an album that would appeal both to the fans of their earlier stuff and to the fans of their later melodic albums (personally I am a bit of both), which is by no means an easy task.
Anyway... I'll give this record some more spins before defining my opinion on it.

This album has an amazing production.

and after that, nothing else...

it's boring to death (always, comparing with their previous work), it has only 1-2 good (not great songs), and some other highlights (some few seconds in some few songs)... pretty dissapointing comparing to their previous work and to the ULTIMATELY overrating rating here on MS...

Even when not compared to their back catalog, this album is still pretty boring.

well at least it remains a bit unique in their own way. other than that, i agree with you, it is boring to death generally...

Starts off quite weak, but they pick it up after a few tracks. Sounds like a more refined yet slightly less original version of Heartwork.

It is good, but it is nowhere near Necroticism. To me it sounds like a watered down version of Heartwork. Anyway it is still enjoyable. Nice to hear something new from these guys after so many years...

btw, there is no Grindcore on this one for sure, someone please reedit style section!
Agree with these comments. Think I prefer all of the previous 3 or 4; I'd almost give it an 8 like this guy did. F-12=
