One of the pioneering bands of progressive metal, the iconic Dream Theater, unleashed their new opus at the end of January. As is the case with all their releases, The Astonishing is going to draw all kinds of comments from "this is the worst thing ever" to "album of the year material". One thing is for certain, with more than 2 hours of music, their latest record is a demanding listen drawing inspiration from many musical and dramatic influences.

Truly special. There are complex feelings I get from The Astonishing and no other album makes me feel this way.

wow

2 means 'pure shit"; I don't think the album is that
maybe a 5 (since here on MS it means "not good")

Just so long, and the production makes most the songs sound identical to one another. Never thought I'd consider it to be a chore to get through a dream theater album

I didn't have any problems getting through this the first time I listened to it - with the lyric booklet in my hand, eagerly awaiting where the story was heading. Of course, the narrative fell apart in the second act. After 80 minutes of setting it up, Act II was resolved too quickly and felt rushed (and still took 50 minutes). What a lopsided mess.

And that's not even mentioning the cliched and generally... um, shitty story itself.

Musically, it's ok-to-good. Though with too many ballads, too much breathy LaBrie singing cloying lyrics. When he's not doing that, he's quite good. The old adage when it comes to double albums that "it would have been better as a single album" is again true here. Trimmed down (and with a less shitty concept) this could have been the best DT album in a while.

Let's be honest, the only reason why this album is so hated is because it's not "METAL!1!!ONE! " enough.

The main reason for the lack of appreciation is probably the uncompromising nature of this thing. There's only a few tracks that work well out of context. I spun this through the other day and still liked it.

The main reason for the lack of appreciation is probably the fact that there are only about 6-7 good songs out of 34.

I said 'tracks' for a reason; it's not a traditionally song-based album at all, bar a few exceptions Much of the album is based on leitmotif, which is likely to throw off the listener if one doesn't care about the script, or limits the listening experience at the very least if you don't realize it. To clarify, with "the script" I don't exactly mean the actual lyrics as they were written last.

This may not be a thing of huge importance for you if the music simply isn't up your alley for the most part, but should give some perspective. I think they've used leitmotif before, but not on a scale this large.

(EDIT: 'you' passive fixes)

Okay so for me this band is losing it. It's obvious Portnoy was keeping things together. Okay there are few good parts here and there but mainly it's super boring. A Dramatic Turn Of Events was a really good album, a lot better than Black Clouds...

Yes. If I can't finish a meal because it is just that bad, I have every right to rate it with a 0/5 or 1/10 or whatever the scale is, I believe the same applies here.

I'd appreciate this more if there were actually memorable motifs. I'll have to try give it another listen during work, but all I remember is the aurally lubricated production and the fact it was very boring with very few interesting parts. I vaguely remembered enjoying the drama one of the antagonist's themes, but that was it.

Usually the more I listen to a Dream Theater album the more I tend like it, this just gets worse. I mean you have an album consisting of 34 songs and pretty much 30 of those feel like a collection of rejected B-side material.

To think that this album was made by the band that made my second favourite album of alltime, really disappointing. Nothing really memorable on this record. It's too long, lacks creativity and is just an overall dull experience.

I don't hate it, don't like it, I feel nothing when listening to it and that's probably the worst thing a Dream Theater album can do if you ask me.

Meh, I couldn't get past half of the first disk. I wasn't expecting anything grand or amazing, heck I wasn't expecting anything period. All I expected was a good DT album, and I was very disappointed. Oh well, hope this year's album will be better. After all, DT is my favorite band of all time. This album was just all around disappointing.
