Those Whom The Gods Detest is an intense, explosion of technical death metal that immediately upstages the band's most recent releases. Nile pulled out all the stops with this one, but unfortunately still produced nothing that will keep you addicted two months down the line. The Nile name can never be overlooked however, and within Those Whom The Gods Detest you will find a death metal album of all the usual Nile traits, which includes the band's usual inexplicable musicianship.

In my opinion this is as good an album as Nile can do, though their next album may be even better. Yes, I am a big fan of the band, but i don't think that accounts for the fact that what we have here is fucking brilliant indeed. Definitely one of their best albums.

My favourite Nile album, it lacks a little in the atmosphere of albums like In Their Darkened Shrines however, it makes up for that with undeniable heavieness and blistering riffing. The quality of the recording is perfect, George Kollias's drumming is the best it has ever been - inventive and works with the songs well. The chanting of "Arra, Arra, Arra... Dagon, Dagon, Dagon" in '4th Arra of Dagon' is something that is quite unique so thats one stand out song. Overall there is nothing much to complain about.

This is one of the best Death Metal Albums I ever listened to. This virtuosity... I can't believe the crushing speed is really followed by those slow bone breaking doomy riffs. And I don't have to talk about the drumming I think because it's superb. I also love those instrumental songs with their oriental flair, just great. There will never be a Death Metal Album which can get near to this one in points of technical and atmospherical perfection. Congratulations, Nile! You made it into history as one of the greatest Death Metal Bands of all time.

In Their Darkened Shrines is far superior, and the pinnacle of their career.

Correcting that old post of JD's. Actually "kaffir" means "misbeliever" or infidel in general. Not necessarily atheist, could be used for anyone non-muslim.

Listened to this one after listening to that catastrophe of an album they should have called At The Gates Of Stfu. Maybe that explains my positive reaction to this one. If my memory isn't failing me, this is one is more energetic than Ithyphallic as well. The songs are a bit long and that's rarely something I like. But I can't find anything else to complain about for now, At The Fails Of Sethu is too fresh in my head.

I'm not stalking you I was just curious to know what you would think about this one and then I must agree with you about your definition of Kafir, that's right.

Yeah I've had worse stalkers, I'm not afraid .
I finally caught up with Nile today. I still have to give this one another go soon, I might have been just "fooled" by the good production. Compared to At The Gates Of See Through production. And I couldn't leave that wrong translation there, it's too much of an important concept in Islam.

I like how Nile is flowing in my room today I think it's definitely standing one step higher than their latest release in 2012.

Nope, it doesn't really deserve more than 7 now that I have heard the whole album for two times, I wish I could rate At The Gates of Sethu 6.5, yeah I must stand corrected that these two albums are not that different.

For me, this album must be the biggest letdown I've ever had. Just felt bland. Sounds like they toned down the brutality, and concentrated bit too much on the technicality (and where did they head on from here...)

Kafir, Utterances of the Crawling Dead, and The Eye of Ra are fantastic; these are songs I can listen to over and over again.

Unfortunately, the rest of the album is merely decent and, while some of the other songs are pretty good, a lot of them don't do a ton for me. Hard to decide between 7 or 8, but I think I'll err on the side of a high 7.

Very nice! In preparation for The Underworld Awaits Us All, I'm making my way through the Nile discog (for the first time post-Annihilation Of The Wicked). I found Ithyphallic pretty boring, but Those Whom The Gods Detest is great. I especially love the entrancing, interweaving guitar solos on "Kem Khefa Kheshef", the high-pitched tremolo riffs on "Utterances Of The Crawling Dead", and the Lovecraftian menace of "4th Arra Of Dagon".
