Wow... thanks for the info. seems like a lot of competition in the prog category this year. we already hv Kalisia's Cybion, OSI's Blood, then Dream Theater's BC&SL, Devin Townsend's Ki and now Porcupine Tree...

Samples of the new album:

What a great year it's been. PT will be fighting with the best too I'm sure, judging by the samples, potential in there.

I think this is the first PT album I'll be looking forward to, because I didn't really get into them until after FOABP was released, and I'm still not that familiar with their songs - I just need to play their albums more. But those samples... god damn this is gonna be great, it looks like.

It's just too bad Porcupine Tree hasn't blown up here in the states...

with bands like Opeth and Three, porcupine tree is getting there.
follow any of the bands, or even Coheed & Cambria and you'll see
a LOT of porcupine tree fans. they're out there.
like, they are coming to toronto(my home town) and the show was sold out about 5 months in advance...

They go slow but steady. It took a lot of time for Porcupine to make it in some places although I think that it was easier in the UK.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think "blackest eyes" was a big hit there.

Meh. I don't like the sound of the new samples. A bit too much FOABP/Nil Recurring, which were some of their poorest work, IMO. The guitar sound, especially. Too noisy and trying to be "metal" to my ears. But then, the vocals sound kick-ass, moreso than on FOABP.
For me, The Sky Moves Sideways, Signify, Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia do the trick. Though I love pretty much everything up to Deadwing, with perhaps the exception of some of their shadiest psychedelic instrumentals (I just don't "get" Metanoia).

I'm in your camp with one exception: I really dig FOABP. I like the path they took on that album - more "metal" sounding

Hope you two have fun!

wow...good question...I wouldn't classify any of PT's stuff as heavy...I'd have to listen to the last 4-5 cd's again to make a good assessment but off hand I'd say the middle part of "Arriving Somewhere..."

Yes, that's the thing with PT, it's usually not a whole song but parts within the songs that are "heavy", or heavier for them.
It's a trademark.
But shallow is definitely one of those.
