Darkthrone... so dark, so cold, and it gives my ass a bad case of frost bite whenever I try to sit on it. Anyway, I love Darkthrone. I have their "Transilvanian Hunger" album, which is considered by many one of the greatest black metal albums ever. I must agree on that, as it is quite enjoyable to listen to once in a while. I feel the knack for populating my CD shelf with more albums, as the current state of my collection is laughable. (I've counted, and I only have 32 albums on my shelf.) Besides "Transilvanian Hunger", what other Darkthrone albums might one recommend?

some purists/tr00 kiddies will recommend "blaze in the northern sky" and "under a funeral moon", maybe "panzerfaust" and slag anything released after those albums.

personally, i'd recommend "Under a Funeral Moon", "Hate Them" and "The Cult is Alive".

the newer records have slightly better production values and slightly more punk feel, particularly on "Hate Them" and "Sardonic Wrath"... it is really clear and evident on "The Cult is Alive" which has a very classic (see: real) punk/motorhead vibe injected into the Darkthrone modus operandi.

You state it is one of the greatest albums in Black Metal history, yet you listen to it only once? I'd consider that weird, if I wouldn't do the same thing myself. The first couple of Darkthrone records may have been very important for the evolution of Black Metal, but they can be incredibly boring at times. I can't remember the last time I heard an entire Darkthrone album.

I've listened to it more than once, you know. Do I need to clarify how many times I have listened to it? OK. I've listened to it 15 times, thank you very much! Do I also need to clarify how many times my ass started to itch when I sit in my chair?

Wow, dude. I think we've got ourselves a nice misunderstanding.

I wasn't trying to attack you or anything like that, not at all. I wanted to state that eventhough I think that for example TH is a classic, I rarely listen to it. Just because it doesn't grab me by the balls like a, say, Shining. And I thought that was the same for you. And I suspect a whole bunch of tr00 bm'ers out there of the same thing.

Heard through the grapevine that it's "killer".

(edit)Listened to F.O.A.D. (the link with 3 tracks someone posted above)
and it's thrashy with more heavy metal influence yet still "black" in

Well, I like the new album. The vocals are layered a bit too much, but other than that I think it's another solid black heavy metal release. In the booklet, they mention about 20 albums that people who are getting bored with metal should check out - like Mercyful Fate, Venom, Slaughter, Manilla Road, and even Repulsion. lol I thought that was cool. Plus, even though they don't have the lyrics in the booklet, they have explanations for them, and surprisingly most of the songs were written in 2005 and 2006.

I think it's fucking badass. They obviously have a lot of fun making this energetic music, and I have a lot of fun listening to it! The attitude is so cool and old-school, and again Darkthrone are saying 'fuck you' to all the kiddies who'll say that the punk tendencies are not kvlt and that they've sold out and everything.

Completes recording two new tracks

Nocturno Culto has issued the following update:

"OK, here we go again. Darkthrone's album 'F.O.A.D.' is now released (what a fucking masterpiece (?)) But do we rest now? Of course not. Last weekend we recorded two new songs for next album...that has a name, but I can't reveal just yet, sorry. I'm all exited AGAIN. As usual Darkthrone is going their own way, usually Against the stream, we're getting praise/slaughtered for doing so, but in the end we are sure our albums will last longer than a decade....HAH. Right, and Dani Pedrosa did win in front of his home-crowd at Catalunya today, good for him, but where were Mr. Capirossi???"

Not likely to happen. "FOAD" is more their blackened touch on traditional metal. Nocturno stating their direction is, as always, "against the stream" pretty much sums that up. They're gonna do what they want, not what the corpsepainted kid posing in the back yard with a kitchen knife under a full moon wants them to do.

Very true, it's what has kept them alive in the underground. I doubt they will ever make another album like "Under A Funeral Moon" or other's of similar sound. I didn't know FOAD was out until today, but I got it and am almost done listening to it for the first time, and I am not totally sure what to think yet... it's not bad however, but I do like the earlier version of "Canadian Metal" more than the album version. I was glad to see that Fenriz had more vocal spot's, I really enjoyed "Graveyard Slut's" on "The Cult Is Alive."

I have heard darkthrone before in 2003, when I acquired "hate them", which I like.

This week I acquired preparing for war and F.O.A.D. , my comments follow:

Preparing for war: I am given to understand that this represents a good selection from the bands finest works. There is much variation. If Iam able to get the full copies of the three signifigant recordings I will. Darkthrone create an organic, raw primevil sound, which I enjoy.

F.O.A.D. Very good, it rocks a little, but still retains the essential sound of this band.

How popular is this band? how signifigant? I think if you picked 10 people at random off the street and played a selection from any darkthrone recording, 9 of 10, or maybe 10 would cringe in disbelief that this is music. What does that say about those of us that find beauty in what Darkthrone create?

From the e-mail interview I did with Fenriz

http://metalstorm.ee/pub/interview.php?interview_id=426&page=&message_id= :

'Canadian Metal' sounds fantastic - high energy, and signature guitar tones and drums, nice guitar solo. As for the subject matter, we can assume you aren't throwing hails and horns to Avril Lavigne or Bryan Adams. What was the lyrical inspiration for this track?

I just namedrop song titles and talk shit about the modern weak sounds (instant gratification metal production) of metal. I need it hairy and difficult, I hate sleek plastic sound. And you all know who you are! DESTROYERS OF METAL! SHAME! I know, because I was one of them with the sound on our very first album, hehe.

Of course, he goes on to say something different in the actual FOAD liner notes, which came across as supportive of some Canadian metal bands.

There was a track on their prior album, "Atomic Coming" dedicated to Piggy of Voivod, as well.

After a couple of listen's I've gotten more into this release, I don't care for about two track's so that's not so bad.

The whole "Canadian Metal" track confused me too, I wasn't sure if it was positive or negative, it seems a bit inbetween. Overall though, I think that it is generally a good thing and pays homage more toward's the older and earlier metal that came out of Canada, one obviously being Voivod (as previous mention). Canada doesn't have piss all for musician's, just trendy bullshit, like Bryan Adams, Avril, Shania Twain, Nelly Fertado(sp), Gob, The Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip (I hate them muchly) and so on. I can say this because I am Canadian, and if you ever have to listen to the radio there then you'll know what I mean, because by-law (at least in B.C.) the radio's are required to play something like 60% or so of Canadian artist, to help promote the nation's musician's.

I am very glad and proud to say that some good black metal is coming out of Canada, and it's rightfully so! Which I can also thank the people here at metal storm for telling me about them, like the band Wolven Ancestry and Dark Forest.
