As far as I can tell the song Canadian Metal is a positive tribute to old 80s metal bands, Infernal Majesty, Razor, Exciter, Slaughter, Piledriver etc that were important to the underground at the time. In anycase the latest album is great, a real homage to old metal sound. I'm loving their direction tbh.

After a couple of listen's I've gotten more into this release, I don't care for about two track's so that's not so bad.

The whole "Canadian Metal" track confused me too, I wasn't sure if it was positive or negative, it seems a bit inbetween. Overall though, I think that it is generally a good thing and pays homage more toward's the older and earlier metal that came out of Canada, one obviously being Voivod (as previous mention). Canada doesn't have piss all for musician's, just trendy bullshit, like Bryan Adams, Avril, Shania Twain, Nelly Fertado(sp), Gob, The Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip (I hate them muchly) and so on. I can say this because I am Canadian, and if you ever have to listen to the radio there then you'll know what I mean, because by-law (at least in B.C.) the radio's are required to play something like 60% or so of Canadian artist, to help promote the nation's musician's.

I am very glad and proud to say that some good black metal is coming out of Canada, and it's rightfully so! Which I can also thank the people here at metal storm for telling me about them, like the band Wolven Ancestry and Dark Forest.

Actually, some of the Québécois Black Metal bands that are surfacing these days are truly amazing.

Indeed, I didn't mention any of the few Quebec band's I listen to because I stumbled upon them before metalstorm. But I am a fan of Nordicwinter and evillair's other one man project's, I am looking forward to his debut with Graven Dusk, Monarque is also quite good. There is a sense of pride that good bm is coming out of Canada, and it seem's to be differant then what's coming out of the US. Maybe I haven't found very many good USBM band's, but most of what I've heard isn't that great, it seem's lacking - although, Wormtongue is one of the best USBM band's that I've come across.

I stopped listening to FOAD a while ago. I only really enjoyed about three songs, some others were good too butI just don't enjoy the album as much as any of their previous releases. It's hard to believe that Darkthrone is responsible for FOAD and A Blaze In The Northern Sky, they just sound so differant.

Blimey 4 tracks already recorded that was quick, yeah I heard that they pretty much started getting material together when FOAD had been released.
I like both their earlier and later music, though I was never into punk but since they've gone in this direction it has got me interested in metal bands with punk influences and have been introduced to a lot of great bands.
Can't wait to hear what their new tracks will sound like.

I get sick of everyone telling me Soulside Journey is the best death metal album of all time, however I ask them what they think of the other albums, and they say nothing.
Personally I think Under A Funeral Moon, Transylvanian Hunger and A Blaze in the Northern Sky are my favourite albums.
I purely enjoy The Cult is Alive and FOAD simply for the fact that it sounds awesomely fun

The point of this song flew so far over your head it left vapor trails.

Aside from the ridiculous liberties you took with the lyrics ("we are so cool!", "you are assholes" - which don't appear in the song), you absolutely missed the point.

It's a rip on a couple facets of the current black metal scene.

First of which is the narrowmindedness of many fans who look back to the Norwegian classics of the early 90's, but cannot go beyond that, those who won't luck further and deeper into metal. This song, and several others on the album, as well as the liner notes, go out of the way to illustrate the band's deeper appreciation of all sorts of metal. Going no farther back than '93 doesn't make one "old school"...

The second is to ridicule the current scene in the sense that the original acts were creative and blazed their own trail. Now that black metal is popular and, to an extent, commercially viable (i.e. "plastic"), entirely too many bands simply color by numbers and follow the path laid out by the vanguard of the second wave. For every new band with a new approach and a new way to express themselves within the paradigm, there are a ton of others really with nothing new to offer, just running around posing for pictures in corpsepaint in the moonlight wielding battle axes and rehashing what has already been done before and better.

Finally, in regards to the direction they choose to take - they do whatever the hell they want. They always have. They don't care about what direction their fans want them to go because entirely too many fans probably just want them to record "Transylvanian Hunger II."

They do what they want and more power to them for it.

@BitterCold: I was just kiddin man!!! do you know whats kidding? I just added ("we are so cool!", "you are assholes") for fun, don't take that so serious. just those vapor trails blinded me for a second.
but I'm just against putting commercial label on other black metal bands.I don't agree with commercial black metal but Darkthrone is a commercial band too. can you deny it? every black metal fan have purchased at last one of their albums (even if never listen to it!!!). even the most commercial band like dimmu borgir never cant sell as much as Avril Lavign. black metal is always in minority, doesn't matter how big and famous you think it is.

You might have been kidding in your post that i responded to, but it's often difficult to convey satire in the written word, particularly on message boards. "Their fans must be donkeys" might be in jest, but still comes across as insulting.

Darkthrone is a slightly commercial band. Slightly. The fact is that they built themselves into what they are from the ground up. Since "Blaze" they have always done musically what they wanted, without regard to the trends in the music industry or even the direction of the black metal scene.

Not only have they shied away from larger success by not playing live shows or altering their sound to something more "now" or catchy, they've also gone out of the way to alienate a chunk of their own fanbase who got hung up on the "T.H." era/phase of the band by eschewing corpsepaint, and allowing their style to reflect what they wanted to record, rather than rehashing "Blaze/Funeral/Hunger/Faust" again and again.

So they might sell records, but it's been based on what they want to do, not what others - either label execs or scenesters - want them to do.

I'd be shocked if "every black metal fan have purchased at least one of their albums" - downloaded? maybe. Purchased? no.

I don't think you've fully caught was I was implying in regards to "commercial" black metal, either. BM is a lot like DM. It was an underground movement that spawned ugly music. Neither will ever achieve huge commercial success (thankfully) - but both will sell a lot of units. In both cases, once the groundwork was laid out, and it became apparent that there were fanbases who would buy and support that type of music, record execs from smaller companies signed up anyone they could get their hands on to move units - and tons of bands who just aped their influences and had formed with nothing new to offer were signed up and started releasing albums.

That is what put death metal on life support in the mid-to-late 90's and it's part of the reason that Black Metal is saturated with mediocrity now.

IT's not a Top 40 commercial phenomenon, but it is still a commercial movement.

Finally, based upon the songs and liner notes in FOAD, the "Fenriz Presents..." album, and even during the course of the email interview Fenriz conducted with me, you have to realize the dude is a HUGE metal fan and is attempting to educate those in the metal community with an open mind by helping expose them to more cool music they might not otherwise have even heard of.

If anything he/they are trying to drive home the simple point of rather than wasting time checking out Darkthrone/Mayhem/Burzum clone #156043, check out Manila Road or Venom or Cathedral or some other band that cut their music from the heart, rather than following the motions and coloring by number.

Man, I normally hate retro but Darkthrone have been taking it to another level lately. I mean their career has basically been a series of paying tribute to various bands they like but at this point they've taken it too far, like they're bringing some kind of revelation to the scene. Criticism is one thing, but if they really want to make an impact they could try making meaningful music. But I guess it's better to succeed at making fun music than to fail at making something great - or maybe it isn't, now that I think of it. Maybe it the message would appeal to me more if I were into the "plastic" stuff, but I think a lot of people's reactions are along the lines of "yes, Fenriz, we know black metal sucks now... you've been part of the problem for years."

Excuse me while I go listen to some Neptune Towers...

@BitterCold: excuse me if you get it as a insult (there was a lots of smoke,I couldn't see what I'm writing),but I'm their fan too, just forget it, ok?
I agree with you about thousands of bands and millions of nonsense records. every sad guy with a guitar and a computer can form a BM one person project these days. but I'm not trying to insult bands like "dark forest" and many other good BMs. darkthrone introduced a very easy to play style in 94, and it turned to a cult for fans who wanted to have a band for themselves.and you know what happen when something become cult for close-minded guys. but I think they can make another album with same the theme as 94 and make it harder to play (and maybe with punky elements) instead of releasing a punk album and insulting current metal scene for being close-minded. I mean when they can control the metal scene (that they have done before) , why they do not that?

You kind of missed the point here. Darkthrone released this album to mock black metal. Black metal used to be their precious jewel, but see what teenager trends, the media and mainstream promotion did to black metal. That's why Darkthrone feel alienated in the black metal scene. Black metal became too mainstream, and it is no longer "their" music. Now it is partly mainstream music, partly an internet culture, and only for a very tiny part the black metal that it used to be.

That's why Darkthrone released this album. Personally I think it is genius. It is still the same primitive Darkthrone, but this time they decided to mock black metal. Something that is appropriate for what black metal has became. Also, I can't imagine you dislike a song like "Canadian Metal". It's logical there is a lot of punk influence on the album. Fenriz clearly stated in several interviews that he is into that type of music.

I hate Transilvanian Hunger. I don't understand how people can love such piss poor recording. Granted most black metal has subpar recording, but that album was unacceptable. The only good CDs I think Darkthrone have put out are A Blaze In The Northern Sky and The Cults is Alive. F.O.A.D. was eh.
