So after the worldwide success of Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I in 1987, Part II was released the following year, and the combination of the two (the band's first wish was to release a double album) gave the band its legend status.

On this album you'll find some of the most known songs of the band, such as Eagle Fly Free, Dr Stein, I want out, and of course Keeper Of The Seven Keys. But all the other tracks are good and have some interest, with great riffs & solos, as well as catchy choruses to sing along. Try March Of Time for example, there's actually no musical reason for such a track to be less famous than I Want Out, it's just that the latter was made a single for the album, like Dr Stein. Oh yeah, there are some funny stuff too, like in Rise And Fall.

There's no denying the fact that this is a very good power metal album, but I much prefer part I, and this is certainly IMHO, not the best power metal album of all, like some people believe it to be, iconic yes, best I don't think so.

I would agree, to me band after early 90s experimental pop sound they katter created better sound as their early albums. I prefer newer ones, even have respect to old ones.

And I don't know what you guys are listening to but the new album is dogshite too.

I thought the songs "Eagle Fly Free" and "I Want Out" were ok, the title track was ok too, but the song "Halloween" from part I, was way out of its league. The rest of the songs are pretty average to me, and I thought "Dr Stein" was the worst song on the album, considering it is one of thier most praised songs.

I can understand why some people like the new album, but it does nothing for me, I thought it was average tbh.

I totally agree with that assessment tbf.

I was such a fan of Keeper I, this came as a complete punch-in-the-face to me back in the day. I still find it astounding so many like it these days as I remember nothing but average to poor reviews at the time.

Anyway... I'm in danger of repeating myself and becoming a bore!

Yeah I hardly listen to any power metal, but this album is a total classic that kicks so much ass. “I Want Out” is probably the best power metal song ever, other than maybe “Deadly Sinners” by 3IOB or “Dawn Of Victory” by RoF.

Gave this another few chances to see if it would grow on me, and I must say I still find Part I much more superior, I guess I was let down by the fact this one has such a high rating, one of the highest on this site in fact. I still don't think it's all that bad, I find the songs "Eagle Fly Free", "I Want Out" and the title song ok, but I really can't get into the rest of the album. Such a shame because I really enjoyed Walls Of Jericho, and Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I.

"I Want Out" is the best song on this album by far, but my favourite song by Helloween ever is "Halloween".

I really don't like this or Pt I. Kiske's voice is overrated IMO. He is much better now on Avantasia, but even the lyrics are crap, at least in the first half. I Want Out and March Of Time are great songs, but the rest are cringey. I'm sad to say this honestly, because I'm a strong power metal fan. There are tons of low-rated power metal albums on ms which are 20x better than this IMO. I could never stand Helloween, and I don't understand how this is the best power metal album ever. It's not. Just my opinion.

I really want to like these albums more but I just don't feel that greater than an 8/10 is appropriate. I think they are the highest rated albums on MS apart from Images and Words that I haven't given a 9 or 10 to, so I get that a lot of people love them, they just don't seem to click with me in the same way

Holy cow, how is possible to someone thinking that "Eagle fly free" is ok, is a really revolutionary song for heavy metal as a whole, is making heavy metal more speed, melodic, aggressive and heavier but without falling in thrash metal, driving in it in another direction and creating a new genre!!

Definitely.
I listened to Helloween for the first time in the early 90s, and back then no one was using the term "power metal", at least not in the magazines I came across. Their music was classified as heavy metal and speed metal.

I listened to Helloween for the first time in the year Keepers II was released. I am pretty positive that they were called "power metal" back then on the Metal Hammer magazine that I was buying every month. I also found this review of the Helloween EP from Metal Forces magazine (Issue 11 - 1985), in which the term "power metal" is used.

edit: @JoHn Doe I find myself having difficulty remembering things, that's why I searched online to make sure. I also think they were classified as heavy metal and speed metal, but there was definitely the power metal tag there too.

I don't remember when and where I saw the term used, maybe early Hammerfall, some Stratovarius album. But it was not in the early 90s.

Well, I never thought I'd get around to writing about the history of power metal, but here we are...

You're both right, somehow.
The term "power metal" is older than the genre itself, but it was used in a more general context in the 80s. For example, Slayer's albums Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits were sometimes promoted as power metal at the time. Back in the days, Venom have also described their music as power metal at times. And believe it or not, there even was a Metallica bootleg from 1982 that was called Power Metal within tape trading circles.
Needless to say, this had nothing to do with todays' definition of the genre - all three bands just wanted to differentiate themselves from the slow and mellow 'mainstream' heavy metal.

Power metal as a vague genre description emerged around 1993 and I'm very sure it was the German record label Noise Records that first coined the term when they announced the Power Of Metal European tour (with Gamma Ray, Conception, Helicon and Rage).
I have no idea how widely the term was used outside of Germany, but I met the first metalhead who came out as a 'power metal fan' at the Dynamo Open Air in Eindhoven in 1998. It may not mean anything, but he had a huge HammerFall patch on his vest. In any case, that was the first time I heard the term outside of Germany.
That's all I can remember.

We have a band in the database called Power Metal that formed in 1987. They're from Indonesia and play... heavy metal?

There's also Pantera's 1988 album Power Metal, the first one with Phil. And there's a song called "Power Metal" on the album too.

I think we can agree on that the time for when the term power metal for the genre that it is today is kinda hard to exactly pinpoint.

A album i've never really liked that much. I always felt it to be stale and lacks the energy from their previous efforts. It sounds a bit better today compared to what I remember so that's a good thing. Side A is quite lackluster even if Dr. Stein is funny and You Always Walk Alone is alright. Side B is on the other quite strong and the cd bonus Save Us is excellent.. so in the end it's not a dissapointment. It's a monumental album for the evolvment of european power metal but not a classic in my book.

Not a big fan of a goofy songs like "Rise And Fall" and "Dr. Stein". Fortunately here's a lot of great ones too, especially: "I Want Out", "Eagle Fly Free", "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" and "March Of Time". Classic album, but I prefer previous much more.

I know that "Dr. Stein" it's a big hit for the band and not awful by any means, but such a happy chorus and silly lyrics - just not my thing.
