Before The Dawn have been around for over a decade, establishing themselves as one of Finland's most prominent metal acts. Their gothic-tinged melodic death metal has captured audiences worldwide, while the brains behind the music - musical puppet master Tuomas Saukkonen - has all but kept the core sound intact throughout the years.

I really don't understand the hype about "4:17 am"; this album absolutely blows 417 out of the water. Very good album.

All melodies are extremely catchy and very accessible, although it is the same old gothenburg\melodeath but it is still very enjoyable

Meh.

Looking at your favourite bands, why did you listen to this in the first place? You cannot expect anything but "Meh" from this melodeath release as a (seemingly) die-hard doom/gothic/black fan...

Sometimes I like to pick new releases from charts and listen to them; I'm just curious, and however the fact that I cannot like a melodeath album because of my tastes isn't entirely true: for example, I really enjoyed the new Omnium Gatherum, "New World Shadows". Or Moonsorrow's "Varjoina..", another excellent release, even though I'm not used to listen to viking/pagan/folk stuff (and I never will).
This one, on the other hand, didn't impress me at all. But if my rating's bothering then I'll delete it, if you want.

Some of his favorite bands include Katatonia, Anathema, Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Alcest... Those bands are on the "softer" or "more accessible" side of metal, much like BtD (who have a strong Gothic vibe to their brand of melancholic melodic death metal) - so it isn't exactly stepping out of his comfort zone by listening to this album.

Looking at my favorite bands, would you guess that I enjoy most of BtD's discography? You can't judge a book by its cover mate.

No need for that - people on this site will always be unimpressed by your votes if you don't give every album they like a perfect 10. If you think this album is average, then it deserves the 6 you gave it.

Troy, most of these "softer bands" used to have "harsher" roots (as you certainly know very well yourself) - Katatonia, Anathema, Paradise Lost, Tiamat... But even their late works are like heaven and hell compared to melodeath (and i LOVE most of these softer albums...) - despite your being right about BtD's gothic vibe (4:17 is the case in point, but Sanctuary and the Butterfly Effect from the last album too).

Kenos, nothing against your rating at all buddy - even if you gave it a 1, it would be a valid opinion. ;-) I was just thinking that the Meh was "a sigh disappointment" and tried to explain that the reason might be a difference to what you are normally used to. Anyway, try to spin it 2 or 3 times, it needs to grow on you a bit... (Apart from the a-bit-too-cheesy Deathstar...) Try Sanctuary and Butterfly Effect... ;-)

I see your logic, and appreciate the reason behind your previous statements.

I should probably check this out. 2011 is passing me by.

The worst Before The Dawn album of all... I was very dissapointed, when I first time heard it. It seems like there was inner conflict in band during recording of this.
