Over the past few years In Flames have been wandering down questionable paths as far as long-time fans are concerned, some abandoned the band completely and the others decided that the new In Flames isn't really all that bad after all, and stuck with them. "A Sense Of Purpose" is a shockingly low blow to the second group of people here as In Flames continue to push towards the twelve-year-old, black dyed fringe bearing individual market - and this time do it in a way that indefinitely is the straw that breaks the camel's back and will not be tolerated by long-running fans.

What a tragedy A Sense Of Purpose is; not because it's hopelessly awful, but because it's been unfairly lambasted for years. Unfortunately, there is no way to correct the damage already done or to change the minds of those who are still mourning the loss of the "Jester Race/Whoracle" era twenty years after the fact, but at least some just dues can finally be given.

Liking every album by a band makes me a fanboy, even though I truly enjoy it?

yes it does
Personnaly, I love all the albums Dark Tranquillity or Skyclad ever recorded (so, yeah, fanboy of both), even if some of them definitely aren't that great (not as bad as this A Lack Of Purpose, though )

Well, it seems that I'm a In Flames fanboy... Even though Soundtrack, and Lunar Strain aren't that great... Well to each their own, I reaaaly like this (way more than the ones I mentioned and most of post-Clayman records)

Funny how our tastes differ, I like Soundtrack (even there are totally forgettable tracks on it), and really do consider Reroute to be their best album - like Clayman on steroids - better sound, more great songs... (note that I do like Clayman a lot, but I think it loses momemtum in the second half)

But I do like Soundtrack, my problem is that it is too incosistent with songs being amazing like My Sweet Shadow, In Search For I and A Touch Of Red to songs being... meh I guess like Like You Better Dead and a couple more and you are totally right about Reroute. Like it as much as A Sense Of Purpose

In my opinion this album is actually good, songs are catchy and have an interesting vibe. Drums are pretty good, songs have enjoyable choruses. I enjoy listening to the album. However the problem is it is made by In Flames, at this point they were in a completely different genre, and expectations ruined how it is perceived.

It is still not a great album however. It has too many songs, and the songs all blend into one the more you listen to it.
