German black metallers Geïst have been threatened by copyright claims over their name by a German rock band also called Geist. In order to avoid lawsuits and fines the band decided to drop the first and last letter and renamed into Eïs. The band's statement reads as follows:


"We, The Artists Formerly Known As GEÏST, have decided to re-name our band into EÏS. This decision is official from now on. EÏS will withdraw into its cavern for an uncertain time. What is certain is that we will be back one day this year, and even more certain: more resolute than ever.


If you wish to express your lack of comprehension for this decision, please directly send your lovely messages to an alternative rock band called GEIST from Cologne, founded in 2000 (www.myspace.com/geistrock), which have forced us to re-name our band by threatening us with law suits and fines. Certainly you will have heard of these guys. *cough cough!*

Well, seems you, our loyal listeners and fans, have made us really big and successful. At least too successful for the Cologne rock star boys to stand our overwhelming existence as GEÏST. Thank you very much - and expect our return later."

Ah this is crap. Cuz we all know Geist is more of a rock band name than a metal band name. Besides, they have an "Ï" in their name so it shouldn't count. Not to mention they're two different genres so why should they care?

I haven't heard of either band. The names were different enough though, and I know that I wouldn't sue in a situation like this if I could. However, if a band came about with the exact same name as one of my projects, that would be a different story. Sometimes it might be okay to sue, but I don't think this instance was a necessary time. If there are differences in the name, then I'd be cool with it. Well, it did come to my mind about the French death/thrash/progressive metal band Gojira and the drum n bass band named Gojira. The latter I am not familiar with, but the first one is a band I am familiar with. I do believe I have read an interview where Joe Duplantier, vocalist/guitarist of the metal band, said that it was unlikely to confuse the two bands and that he was fine with the existence and name of the other band. So, it depends on whether the other band independently thought up the name or whether the thought of the name is a blatant rip-off of the first band's name. This is something to think about.

Well there are names, that are shared by dozen of bands...

but usually, if the band ever become more "famous", they realize themselves, that there was already someone else before and change their name from own intention...or sometimes they are forced by court like Rhapsody...

I love their response haha -- what a bunch of crap, these guys from Cologne should be beaten with wrenches. Geïst (black metal) obviously didn't rip the name off, and who the fuck has ever heard of the other Geïst anyway?
