"Falling Into Infinity" is Dream Theater's fourth full-length album and it was released in 1997, following the very complicated "Awake". So what could you expect more from this record? Surely a lot seeing the amazing work produced on "Awake". And their music meets again fans' expectations while bringing new people into their pool of listeners. Why? Let's see...
It would be much much better if they would be given the freedom. Damn record labels But still, very enjoayble
record label had nothing to do with how they sounded on this album and the sort of songs they wrote. It was the band themselves that wanted to go down that road.

Well, you see, I heard a bit different story. But at the end of the day, you might be right.

No Ravenous is right. The band told about this in their documentary "The Score So Far..." 20th Anniversary Documentary from the Score live DVD. They said they couldn't release some songs that they intended to be on the CD. Raise the Knife is one of those songs (they played the song on the Score DVD). See the clip here (starts at 1:40 minutes).
The bulk of this album ranges from great (Peruvian Skies, New Millennium, Just Let Me Breathe) to some of their very best work (Trial of Tears, Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand). In-between are some lesser songs and maybe one too many ballads (all of which I find enjoyable). Yeah yeah, "You Not Me" is weak, but hardly bad enough to ruin the entire album.
Couple the overall very high quality of the songs with one of their best production jobs and you have what I consider to be a top 5 DT album.
I don't get it. Falling Into Infinity really has nothing interesting going on, the songs are mostly bland and forgettable, it doesn't have any really amazing parts that make you want to stop whatever you are doing and check it out like most of their better albums do. Listening this through some time ago I was literally waiting anxiously for the end so I could listen something else. I heard the record company messed this one up, so it's not the band to blame.

You've got a lot of guts. Let's see what they look like!

This album grows on you the more you listen to it. It's much slower than any other DT album, more subtle for a change (most of their albums are very straightforward). It has some of their best work (Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years, Hell's Kitchen, Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears). Give it a try, it may click someday. Just skip some real stinkers like You Not Me and Anna Lee, or something else as well, because the worst thing about this album is not the quality it-self, but the running time. 78 minutes... I believe its their longest non double-cd album. I think it's better than anything after Scenes From A Memory.
Well I didn't like this album when I was younger, however, with more listens I finally get it. Now I enjoy it a lot, even more than awake. It's even better that their most recent albums, mainly because this album at leats makes me feel something.
This is a good album, many are better, but this is still fairly enjoyable. Burning My Soul, Take Away My Pain, Just Let Me Breathe are the songs that take down the rating here, terrible stuff imo. Hollow Years is a surprisingly good ballad, and Hells Kitchen and Trial of Tears are great songs.

This is surprisingly the DT album I come back to the most often these days. I can't rate it higher because of stuff like "Anna Lee" or "You Not Me", but "New Millenium", "Peruvian Skies", Lines In The Sand" and "Trial Of Tears" are just something else

I agree that Anna Lee is a bit of a cheesy ballad, but I've always liked You Not Me.
On Trial of Tears, they ripped UK's In The Dead of Night and now I cannot un-hear it. Listen to the two songs back to back and you'll see what I mean.

I thought the two primary purposes for the internet were cat memes and overreactions.
If you cut "You not me", "Lines in the sand", "Take away my pain", "Just let me breathe", "Anna Lee" (so half the album lol) and replace it with "Raise the knife", then it automatically becomes better than any album with Rudess.
Lines in the sand ?? That's the best song on the album bro

The Falling Into infinity demos are a must listen for anyone enjoying the album or the band in general. And yes, I agree, the album is better than a lot of albums with Rudess.
