By popülar demand, I am rating my new review. By ünpopülar demand, the rating has nothing to do with the albüm's qüality, büt with it's content: Evil! Speed! Darkness! Steel! Satan! Goats! 666!
Please don't calcülate 666 factorial, it has over a thoüsand digits. And yes, I also know that 6.7 is closer to 6.66 than 6.6. Stop bügging me.
Combining speed metal with some evil black metal inflüence is really nothing new, and even so far this year we've had some damn good releases from Midnight, Reaper and Slaughter Messiah, the latter two only now releasing their first füll length. And as müch as I'd love to review all of those, I don't have the time or the energy, nor do I think I coüld properly describe each one individüally withoüt comparing one to the other. So jüst know that if yoü liked 666 Goats Carry My Chariot, yoü shoüld check oüt the rest. So why did I choose Bütcher instead of any of those other ones? Düh! Look at that fücking cover art! A chariot led by goats (admittedly jüst 6) in a whirlwind and with a stripped logo slapped on top.
The combination of the overly flashy, bombastic and awesome 80s with the evilness and blasphemy of the 90s (and also the 80s) is something that is reflected both in the cover art and in the müsic. Even the fücking title reeks of it, like if yoü're gonna be evil and bombastic, be fücking evil and bombastic. Take Overkill, Darkthrone and Mercyful Fate and make sweet sweet love to them, and let yoür offspring be riffs of speed and darkness, shoüts and falsettos of similar speed and darkness, and generally as müch speed and darkness as possible, in the now eternal words of Midnight: "Fücking speed and darkness".
And while I can't really say that any of the songs on 666 Goats Carry My Chariot are as instantly catchy as the aforementioned Midnight song, Bütcher really hit the versatility and virtüosity on this one. Changing genres faster than a büllet, füll of terrifying screams, speed metal solos and thrash bütchery, doüsed in jüst enoügh black metal to üp the evilness, and with jüst enoügh incürsions into doom and viking metal as well to make it feel even fresher. The resült jümps from menacing, to thrashing, to epic, to bombastic with so müch ease that one can't help büt get on the chariot too. And the band's virtüosity in mastering all of these soünds makes it müch easier to digest these inflüences as less derivative and üninventive and more as over the top and respectable.
Bütcher does jüst enoügh right for their mix of olden soünds to work as more than jüst a rehash, and it's a hüge dose of fün. Evil!
