E-an-na interview (10/2021)

Band profile:

E-an-na

E-an-na was a band that was all the rage five years ago when they released their debut EP, Jiana. For a country where half the bands are some sort of folk metal bands, their style was fairly unique, taking a more modern metal approach, even if that wasn't as obvious on that EP as on future releases. I knew Andrei and Ovidiu from their time in Prohod, and I rode their tour van once between shows. In the meantime they released an ambitious full length, and two EPs which are pretty big detours from their sound. A tango EP and an EP that brought them accusations of ruining the Romanian rock industry are not usual for a folk metal band. I managed to find a slot between Andrei's allocated time for his ten other music projects and I talked with him and Ovidiu about the band, their two recent EPs, what music implies, and how to get Lidl shoes.

Both of those EPs are available on Bandcamp:

So, since the video format means that I cannot sprinkle links throughout the text, I'll just add additional context and links here.

Here are SSUS' reviews of E-an-na's stuff: Jiana EP, Nesfârşite, Fascinathanatango EP, and M.L.R. EP. The last one also contains some context on my part about why it's controversial in the comments.

Here's more stuff by Bogdan de la Vâlcea. Here's Ionica Minune. Here's Marian Mexicanu. Here's that song with Florin Salam and Goran Bregovic. Here's where I took that "7 Rings" bit. Here's Nicolae Guta's early music. Here's some Astor Piazolla. Here's that Lochrian Poem that I reviewed. Here's Ovidiu's solo album. Here's the newest Prohod song.

I think I mentioned this in my Nesfârşite review, but Andrei really does have a huge number of projects and I'm glad that E-an-na is getting so much of his attention, because they're quickly becoming one of my favorite folk metal bands. Jiana was a cut above the rest even in a fairly straightforward style with a Romanian spin, and then Nesfârşite added a lot of new ideas to that - but Fascinathanatango and M.L.R. push a lot of boundaries, and I wish that E-an-na got more credit as innovators within and without metal. I can't wait to hear what other projects they were hinting at. Can we get a ska crossover?

Also, I'm tickled to learn that this Bogdan character is not, in fact, some famous manele artist, as was my natural assumption from seeing him listed as a collaborator. I'm glad that that came up in the interview, because I was stumped by my inability to find much about him when I was reviewing the EP.
