The Shadowthrone (1994): Another masterpiece? Will it be? That's what he asked me...

I tend to think too much about which would be better between Dark Medieval Times or The Shadowthrone; after pondering for too long, I choose Dark Medieval Times but, but, but... The Shadowthrone has something special. I love the beginning "Hvite Krists Død"; it's very heavy and epic at the same time. However, I also have a small problem with the album; only two songs felt overwhelming, although I want to believe that it is because I still have a long way to go to understand those songs better. I'm not saying it's bad for nothing; other people will prefer The Shadowthrone to Dark Medieval Times. Varied tastes, everyone has their own point of view, and that is respected.

1994, a year of pure classic black metal: truly pure classics, and everyone will know which bands with their albums released that year I am referring to. That's where The Shadowthrone came in.

I have to clarify that most of the songs strive to be much better than those on their previous album. They achieved it in a certain way; they are faster and with brutal riffs. Frost is destroying it on the drums, and Satyr on vocals and guitars with his stellar guest Samoth from Emperor... Wow, wow, it's great, very cool.

"In The Mist By The Hills" is one of the fastest pieces, and "Dominions Of Satyricon" is another very epic piece at the beginning that grows fast afterwards. Do I say that it overwhelms me? I'd better change my mind... its ending is a medieval instrumental, and that's how I interpret it. The conquest of the Throne of Shadows results in a symphony of glory.

They are great albums; listen to them anyway, and see which one you prefer out of Dark Medieval Times or The Shadowthrone. You choose; all this is my humble opinion. Thank you.

Dark Medieval Times, Nemesis Divina, and this are all legendary albums. The dark, evil atmosphere is majestic, and I like pretty much every song on this album, but "In The Mist By The Hills" has always been my personal favorite, the last section especially.
