"Unorthodox Creative Criteria" is probably one of the best surprises of the year 2005. Actually how many people can pretend that they already know this combo that comes from Chile? Not a lot of souls unfortunately and even if the precedent album of Corprofago "Genesis" had its little success in 2000. Five years later, the Chileans are back with their excellent new production and this time I'm ready to bet some money on the fact that they will win the recognition that they deserve.
That's right, there are a lot of similarities between "Unorthodox Creative Criteria" and the last Meshuggah's releases and some people will say that it is just a rip off of the Swedish band and I don't think so. First Coprofago is not a newcomer that tries to surf on the wave, they're formed since 1993. Also there are in my opinions some important differences between the two bands when it comes to a comparison. They guys of Coprofago say that they play "Jazzy" Metal, and actually it's easy to see that the Jazz influences are a lot more present on Coprofago's albums than on Meshuggah's music.
But yes I cannot say that Coprofago doesn't play the same kind of Metal than our guys from Sweden. Strong and heavy riffs in addition of really aggressive vocals, powerful drums with a lot of breaks, and above all technical solos with a lot of Jazz influences. That's the recipe of Coprofago's music and believe me it's good.
Is it a problem if we have a band that plays something in the same spirit than another one? Do we have a lot of problems with the numerous bands that play Symphonic music or Power? No, unfortunately only a few people complain about this masquerade then I don't see why it could be a problem to have a good band in this category of "Progressive" Thrash (if I can categorized them it like that?) especially when it's good and well done.
The production of the album like all the songs of the album are excellent, and when you know that the band is even able to write a progressive masterpiece like this "Motion", I hope that you understand that you can't miss "Unorthodox Creative Criteria". It's original and fresh and this is one of the big surprises of the year. Don't miss it please, especially if you like such music.
