How does one break boundaries in music, exactly, or in any art form for that matter? Sometimes it seems so complicated that the answer eludes our grasps entirely, but at the end of the day it really just boils down to one simple rule: be unafraid.
When it comes to Vulturium Memoriae, fear of new ideas is virtually nonexistent. The baby of an individual from Italy known only as Mirg, this one man project's Nato Per Ragioni Ignote debut is a massive force of originality that powerfully demonstrates that this guy is not at all hesitant to traverse the icy waters of the unknown. It's a bit difficult to describe this album in words due to the complete idiosyncrasy of it, but what we are essentially treated to here is drone doom, not of the dark, colossal sort employed by bands like Sunn O))) and Moss, but of a more atmospheric brand, with a very, airy, free-flowing guitar, and a rumbling, hypnotic bass that helps to hold everything together for a truly mesmerizing vibe. The music here is a ritual, and in true ritual fashion each track flows naturally into the next, forming a beautiful, cohesive whole.
But there's nothing all that special about drone doom, right? Well, the real trick to Nato Per Ragioni Ignote, believe it or not... lies not so much in its droney doom core, but in its black metal influence. This is a very subtle aspect of the music of Vulturium Memoriae, but one that cannot be denied for the role that it plays in the final formula. Right from the opener "Dissolvenza Della Ragione," one can hear the abrasive, razor-sharp, tremolo-heavy tone of the guitar that enters the forefront, unquestionably giving off a black metal vibe. It's an approach that continues throughout the entirety of the album, and it paradoxically makes it feel like a black metal album without actually being one. "Grigiore a Cielo Aperto" is another fantastic example, with the tone and riff structure of the bass lines sounding quite doomy, but with the guitar and other effects creating quite the black metal atmosphere, and the two meshing and procreating with each other until it's not all that clear which is which.
One of the observations that I like to make is that today in music, innovation is all about finding the hidden lines that connect seemingly unrelated styles to each other, and taking full advantage of them towards the creation of something new. When it comes to this principal, Mirg has found those "invisible lines" between doom, drone, and black metal, and exploited them to an absolutely stunning degree. I would say that both Nato Per Ragioni Ignote and Transient (Chaos Ech?s) were probably the two most forward-thinking albums from the past year, just in terms of how much they managed to deconstruct the traditional confines of their respective genres and give listeners a portrait of what their futures have the potential to be. With Vulturium Memoriae, to be quite frank, I have not heard such an interesting combination of black metal and drone doom since first getting into the mighty Gnaw Their Tongues a while ago. My eyes are now firmly fixed on this project and what comes next from Mirg, and if you're someone who values originality in art as much as I do, yours should be as well.
Born Due To Unknown Reasons.
*Also, even though he's heard it a hundred times, it's necessary to give a big shout out to my good friend Mahdi, without whom I never would've heard of this band or album. Thanks for consistently finding great stuff and giving this guy the heads up
