It's always difficult to review a "Remix" album, even more when the remix consists in full techno music in the vein of Aphex Twin. This event is really hard to digest just because what we heard in the original album was way to impressive to say the least, then it seems that Ephel Duath does not follow that old adage "If it's not broken - don't fix it".
The overall mix is not horrid or inadequate, on the contrary, the audio assault is marvelous, the "pro-tools" work (or whatever software they're using) is just impeccable with a lot of clean but powerful effects thrown in the mix, finally the musical sense is on a rampage and it's eating power-ups from the beginning to the very end of the album; but then again, who will really appreciate this kind of things? Most Ephel Duath fans are people who is into different types of Metal, people who loves either the extreme or the progressive side of metal to be more precise? people who obviously don't have anything to do with "psycho/electronica" whatsoever.
So anyway, I can see how MortIIs got away with murder and received positive acclaim with "Some Kind Of Heroin", but it will be 5 times as difficult for this band to be praised for their bizarre twists, they were already an avant-garde band, it just seems that they took things a little further but got lost in the middle of the line.
Overall the album will work incredibly well as background music, the layers and structures found in here are just sick and intense, so it could even fit as the colorful and surreal score in a Darren Aronofsky film? but believe me when I say it will be hard enough to sit down and listen to the whole thing just to seek some amusement; if you're an avid Ephel Duath collector, by any means buy this album as it is as rare as it promises to be, if you're a mere mortal like so many of us, stick to the original piece and avoid the bad headaches.
