Technical Madness

This is a list dedicated to everything crazy, eclectic and technical. I know there are many many more albums that could be added, but these are the ones I personally recommend. One album per band order by the level of "technical madness" (whatever that metric is).

Created by: K✞ulu | 22.02.2012

1. Blotted Science - The Machinations Of Dementia
2007 - Instrumental Technical Death?
2. Änglagård - Hybris
1992 - Symphonic Prog (One of a kind band that simply transcends musical structure with their whimsical approach to songwriting but also creates some amazingly beautiful melodies as well)
3. Coroner - No More Color
1989 - Technical Thrash
4. Invocator - Excursion Demise
1991 - Technical Thrash
5. Deathspell Omega - Paracletus
2010 - Black (Both chaotic and melodic, multi-layered and clear; drumming is the highlight of the album for me, although one will notice the interesting use and (sludgy?) tone of both rhythm and lead guitars. The compositions overall are interesting even if not memorable: this is quite a journey)
6. Gorod - Leading Vision
2006 - Technical Death (Amazing groovy, melodic technical death metal - essential tech death)
7. Protest The Hero - Fortress
2008 - Progressive Metalcore
8. Shining (NOR) - Blackjazz
2010 - Industrial
9. Beyond Creation - The Aura
2011 - Technical Death
10. Believer - Dimensions
1993 - Technical Thrash
11. Obscura - Omnivium
2011 - Technical Death
12. Revocation - Empire Of The Obscene
2008 - Technical Death/Thrash
13. Behold The Arctopus - Skullgrid
2007 - Instrumental Technical Death/Math
14. Linear Sphere - Reality Dysfunction
2005 - Progressive Metal (really unorthodox prog metal, with truly mad vocals, a lot of great technical instrumentation, but not without tasty hooks)
15. Between The Buried And Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence
2012 - Extreme Progressive/Mathcore (A benchmark of modern progressive metal with extreme metal elements)
16. Noneuclid - Metatheosis
2014 - Avantgarde (Experimental) Thrash/Death (an interesting alloy of extreme, acoustic, and at times atmospheric "laid back" elements; complex but passionate music)
17. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
2006 - Stoner
18. Metallica - ...And Justice For All
1988 - Thrash
19. Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
1988 - Extreme Progressive
20. Forced Entry - Uncertain Future
1989 Technical Thrash (These guys play lots of great riffs and solos but they really don't want things to be simple; a must of technical thrash)
21. Toxik - Think This
1989 - Technical Thrash (Lots of technical thrashy riffs: check out "Think This" and "Technical Arrogance" - you will see what I mean)
22. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
1990 - Progressive Death
23. Hypno5e - Acid Mist Tomorrow
2012 - Technical Metalcore (A great combination of very aggressive, brutal metalcore with lengthy beautiful atmospheric passages)
24. Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
1988 - Instumental Virtuoso (Technical both in terms of pure guitar skill but also in occasional crazy rhythm structures and changes; the album features two of my favorite guitar players: Jason Becker and Marty Friedman)
25. Psychotic Waltz - Into The Everflow
1992 - Progressive Metal (The more technical representation of prog metal and that comes from 1992!; I hear elements here that are now used by bands like BTBAM)
26. Aspid - Кровоизлияние
1992 - Technical Thrash (Quite an amazing technical thrash metal debut from 90's Russia)
27. Gnostic - Engineering The Rule
2009 - Progressive Death (A little demanding at times in terms of technique, but nevertheless, the riffs are pretty good + there are some calmer (even jazzy) moments here)
28. Hieronymus Bosch - Artificial Emotions
2005 - Progressive Death (An intricate piece of progressive death metal, with a lot odd-time signature passages, but very well-constructed and played melodies kind of like Gorod can do, often reminiscent of Atheist and Dark Tranquility; however, space passages in the vein of Arcturus a very pleasant surprise)
29. Frogg Café - Bateless Edge
2010 - Prog Rock/Jazz Fusion (Not necessarily technical, but definitely mad; the level of polyphony here is unbelievable, that is the number of seemingly independent things go on simultaneously; a cherry on the top is occasional jazzy piano and mind-bending "avant-gardism")

Hey Invocator! Recently heard of those guys, I've only heard 'Weave The Apocalypse' but it was pretty good. Is 'Excursion Demise' any better?

Yes, I believe Excursion Demise is better than Weave The Apocalypse although I still need to give these two more listens. Excursion Demise impresses with its crazy soloing and brutality.

Anything with Coroner involved gets a from me!!

Although, No More Color is not my favorite album by them, I think it is the most technical along with Punishment for Decadence; but I prefer the former.

Thanks for the +1 guys!

prefer their albums The Coming of Genocide and Everything is Fire

But they are not really on the further edge of "technical madness." And yeah, do listen to Blackjazz: crazy, trippy stuff.

Oh god Behold... The Arctopus are so bad

i like them

perfect for a list called technical madness

but for that there should be no Mastodon or Metallica
adding BrainDrill, Anomalous, Origin and Gorguts would be much more fitting

True, if BTA are going to be here, than why not add more mindless technicality like Brain Drill. And Gorguts - Obscura should be on here without a doubt

Try meshuggah.....

Seriously? I don't find them technical, just odd time signatures don't make it technical. I might be wrong though, coz I haven't heard too much of meshuggah. There is only so much I can take with musicians having fits while playing.

Anyway nice list, definitely some great bands. I love Invocator's through the flesh to the soul.

Spiral Architect would be a good add on this list. But you're missing one of the greatest of them all. Martyr!!

Since you have Invocator's speed thrash album you might as well add Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead, Realm - Endless War, Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly, Heathen - Victims of Deception.

As I have written in the list description, I include albums which I personally enjoy and recommend. I should go back and listen again to the first three and give Victims of Deception a try though, so thanks for the suggestion. Watchtower never really sat well with me, but last listens were a little different, so they might end up here.
