Art Appreciation: My Top Favorite Metal Album Artwork/Cover Art Of 2020

My source was looking at the most popular 1000 metal albums (excluding demos and EPs) of the year in question on the RateYourMusic website. I liked more than these but these are the ones that spoke to me the most. I went through all 1000, chose carefully, then went back to my short list and eliminated a few. Surprisingly, there aren't any Mariusz Lewandowski pieces featured here which is unfortunate because like a lot of people I'm quite a fan of his art. List is in order of popularity rather than being ranked by my preference.

My Top 3 Artworks:

#1 Gaerea - Limbo; Artist: Eliran Kantor
#2 Testament - Titans of Creation; Artist: Eliran Kantor
#3 Carnosus - Dogma of the Deceased; Artist: Moonroot (Vojtěch Doubek)

If you want, feel free to tell me your favorite artwork for the year.

1. Ulcerate - Stare Into Death And Be Still
2. Neptunian Maximalism - Éons
The most colorful of my choices.
3. Black Curse - Endless Wound
4. Testament - Titans Of Creation
I didn't notice before until I really looked at it but the DNA strand being poured out is a line of people being created.
5. Cirith Ungol - Forever Black
Reminds me of Gerald Brom's artwork who's a gothic fantasy artist who's done pieces for trading/collectible card games which is another of my main hobbies.
6. Cénotaphe - Monte Verità
7. Pallbearer - Forgotten Days
8. Incantation - Sect Of Vile Divinities
9. Gaerea - Limbo
My most favorite artwork of 2020. I just love how the people in the water are painted and the use of white.
10. Temple Of Void - The World That Was
11. Ygg - The Last Scald
12. Currents - The Way It Ends
13. Temple Nightside - Pillars Of Damnation
The darkest, evil art piece featured here.
14. Hatebreed - Weight Of The False Self
The fourth and final Eliran Kantor artwork on my list. I love the guy's art and all but his artwork is usually featured on bands or albums I could careless about.
15. Solothus - Realm Of Ash And Blood
16. Azusa - Loop Of Yesterdays
I listened to this entire album during the voting process of Metal Storm's 2020 Awards and the more I kept staring at it, the more I gravitated toward the cover art. I know it probably wouldn't appeal to a lot of people but I do like it's artsy feel regardless.
17. Ondskapt - Grimoire Ordo Devus
Much like the Ygg album above, I like these art pieces working with very few color combinations blending together well when you view the artwork as a whole.
18. Horn - Mohngang
Nice scenery without a focal point.
19. Disavowed - Revocation Of The Fallen
20. Sons Of A Wanted Man - Kenoma
The way those hands are drawn...
21. Kall - Brand
The main reason for my love of this artwork is the ambiguity of it. If you don't see it, comment down below and I'll tell you.
22. Blasphamagoatachrist - Bastardizing The Purity
A nice piece having the aesthetic it belongs on a demo rather than a full-length. Plus, I love how the demons and naked women are drawn.
23. Fides Inversa - Historia Nocturna
24. Sacred Outcry - Damned For All Time
25. Big Scenic Nowhere - Vision Beyond Horizon
While this piece doesn't seem professional per se, it's mostly here because of its surreal quality.
26. Terra Atlantica - Age Of Steam
The detail on the cathedral sealed the deal for me. This piece looks like it would belong on the cover of a 90's PC video game or something of that nature.
27. Rannoch - Reflections Upon Darkness
Another cover art I feel wouldn't appeal to many. I like what's drawn rather than how it's drawn.
28. Rotting Kingdom - A Deeper Shade Of Sorrow
This was my original vote for the Metal Storm Awards (because time was running short) but as you can see it's not even in my top 3. Still a phenomenal piece by Adam Burke.
29. Grifteskymfning - Svart Materia
One of my favorite minimalist pieces not having an elaborate background. Gorgeous skeleton (like Disavowed) and blue flames.
30. Ages - Uncrown
There're three pieces that stood out to me involving arson. This is the only one on the list but the artworks for Megaton Sword and Glorious Depravity are worth the time to check out as well.
31. Carnosus - Dogma Of The Deceased
32. Sickle Of Dust - To The Shores Of Sunrise
