Just a decade ago, Ministry broke out from its 80's synth-dance music with a pretty little album called Psalm 69. With repetitive, snarling guitars, hellish vocals, weird screams and pounding drums; Ministry became sort of the antagonist band to all that was available in the music market at that time.

The album kicks off with the great 'N.W.O', a track that uses one of George Bush's speeches, giving a sort of aggressive political twist to the song. This track gives just a little taste to what will the rest of the album will be. Next is 'Just One Fix', a song with weird screams, repetitive guitars. Just brutal, raw industrial metal. 'Hero' and 'TV II' are just as aggressive and intriguing as the last two. 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' is probably the best song of the entire CD. With the collaboration of the Butthole Surfers? singer, Gibby Haines and its unbelievably silly lyrics, this is one of the most tuneful track ever made by Ministry. After this, the album moves into a much slower pace. I mean, 75 minutes of pure ear-pounding industrial would be quite annoying for anyone. 'Scarecrow' is a slow, calm track that uses a guitar riff similar to 'When The Levee Breaks', definitely a refreshing song. The last two tracks are a bunch of nightmarish yells and noise. The first track is appropriately named 'Corrosion' and the last one has the ironic title of 'Grace'.

Must own.

Just bought it. I only wanted the album with Jesus Built My Hotrod, but, for only $20, got a pack of 5 albums (Twitch throuth to this one, including a live album). So basically, I've got 4 disks of bonus stuff!

Are the 3 albums before it good? Jesus... is the only ministry song I've heard.

Ministry's evolution in sound is pretty interesting to say the list. Craig (BitterCOld) used a term which I think is perfect: Reverse sell-out.

You see, these guys started as a New Wave band, yeah... Let that sink in for a few minutes. The first album is Totally New Wave/synthpop. It's good for those who appreacite the style Then they started to go more and more into industrial.

Psalm 69 is one of their best albums imo, this is the point when Ministry trully embraces the term industrial metal and they were one of the bands that pioneered the style. You should totally give "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" a chance. Not only because it has a really cool title but because it's also one of the most influencial albums for the genre. So many big names like Fear Factory own one thing or two to that album. So yeah... You should go for that one.

Here, have a taste:
Thieves (One of their most classic songs... and one of the most classic industrial metal songs too).
Burning Inside (Intense shit with perfect and hella agressive vocals

You kind of want to check out all their albums because their style varies a lot so you never know what you are going to like. But "The Mind..." is a must. Other great albums I know (I haven't heard all their releases yet) are Animositisomina, Houses Of The Molé, Rio Grande Blood and The Last Sucker.

But specially Rio Grande Blood. Just check out this track... Deliciously vicious Industrial/thrash. Just listen to 3:22... Or this track at 3:58 They are basically playing Slayer meets machines if not out-playing Slayer all the way.
So yeah dude... Get your homework done. Hopefully you'll dig the stuff I recommended.

I had Psalm 69 in my car today. Tracks 4-7 are real good, the others arn't bad. If Twitch, Land of..., Mind... and In Case You... are of similar quality, then I think I got a real bargin at $4 a disc.

I don't promise anything of Twich because that's the album when the guys were getting out of the new wave thing and go more industrial. But still no metal... The Metal begins in Land Of and culminates in this album.

Those tracks are good but I would say the strongest part of this album is 1-6. Tracks like N.W.O and specially Just One Fix are incredibly powerful, effective and show how much influence they have over so many other industrial metal bands, they own them so much just for the drums alone hahaha. "The mind..." is definitely the strongest of the first bunch of cds though. Be sure to check out their later period too, specially Rio Grande Blood.

"In Case..." is a live cd btw but a really good one. It's a short setlist but without any filler at all. Only classy shit from their old period that works great live.

This was the very first industrial album I ever heard, and it did leave a profound effect on me. In particular, the track "Scarecrow" which is still one of the most monumental pieces of music I've ever heard.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

If you're referring the current title, it's not a Latin word. It's greek meaning "head." I assume it is, at least. That's what it says on Wiki.

Holy shit what a coincidence to be thinking of this none other than it to be only on its 30th anniversary.

I listened to this the first time going back home through a valley in the purest of summer darkness. With not a single person or car in sight, and a belly full of Grey Goose.

I couldn't have asked for a more daunting, better introduction to this if I was able to.

A harrowing trip.

[edit]

Ministry was likely inspired by who I'm spinning atm. Test Dept. 80's political fused tribal-industrial.

Throbbing Gristle can only wish they were this engaging. Underrated rose gold.
