Funeral doom is a pretty hard genre to get into, with its lethargic paces and long-form songwriting. A lot of the funeral doom I've found the most engaging were the ones that made it crushing and sprinkled it with black or death doom metal. But The Howling Void go on a completely different route.

Quite... positive-sounding? For a funeral doom album that is.

I haven't listened to this band before though I'm not that thrilled about funeral doom anyway. This was just maybe a bit too slow all the way for me. Slow pace wouldn't be a problem if there are some tad faster parts but there isn't. Vocals also don't do anything for me. So my understanding for funeral doom still waits for better (or worse) day.

I understand funeral doom is a slow-tempo genre, but this is a wee bit too slow for my tastes. The first two tracks I'm struggling with, I can handle them for so long before they start to tediously grate on me. The third track however is fantastic (to begin with at least), the sweeping guitarwork is pleasant on the ears, and it has an interesting melancholic flowing build up which reminds me of something from Veronika Decides To Die, but then the song enviably runs out of steam. The last track is slightly more upbeat and heavier than the rest it seems, and isn't that bad either.

I understand the emotional aspects of it, to a degree, there are parts when the atmosphere works wonders, especially on the third track. I'm usually an upbeat kinda guy so to be left with an empty feeling afterwards is out of my nature. Still, it's not a bad effort considering it's one guy!

Got extremely bored to the point of getting annoyed by listening to this record. It's pretty bad for a project that has involved me in almost every effort before. It lacks... soul.

Wow! I must listen urgently the first albums from this project, because I found this one very nice, but I read here so much bashing for the album. Some recommendation to begin with which album from him?

I found this album pretty relaxing. A little empty at times, but not terrible. I'm not a huge Funeral Doom fan either. I also didn't think it was that slow paced compared to others in the genre. I'm happy it wasn't 2 hours long like most too.

As others have said, Funeral Doom can be hard to get into. I'm not particularly a fan of the genre but I really liked this album.

Very hard to get into, and definitely not for me. Listened for 45min waiting for an emotion other than boredom which never came.

If you listened to this and enjoyed it, all the power to you!
