Exactly my thoughts. Other than that, I think the first half of the song is brilliant, while the second half is just good.
Also, the baby sounds in the beginning of the song are slightly annoying, but it's no big deal obviously (just stating the few things I don't like about the song).

The guitar solo near the end just screams prog.

This one's a bit of a grower for me, but it's still excellent. Personally when it comes to album-long songs I still prefer Edge of Sanity's Crimson I and II, but this is still an awesome song with a lot of twists and turns.

I know it's an old comment but I agree. The female vocals sound okay at first, but get pretty obnoxious when she starts "orgasming" or whatever. Though I wouldn't blame her considering how good the rest of the album/song is.

I totally understand why people love it... But I'm not feeling it as much. Will try to replay it though but it will probably stay this way.

After thinking about it for two weeks I can safely say it was my favorite show at the festival too My expectations for this band were sky-high and they did not disappoint me.

The part with the female vocals is terrible and the last 30 minutes are nowhere near as good as the first 30 minutes, but still an awesome song.

First half masterpiece, second half quite a letdown. This seems to be public consensus.
However, imo, the final 15 minutes, stand out again. This is where they are perfectly closing the circle, putting the pieces together, picking up the main theme again. Perfect closer for this beautiful opus.

One-song albums like this one are in some ways easier to write/compose than regular albums with multiple songs. You can get away with a lot of repetition and boring/average parts, so long as you refresh the listener with a nice riff or tempo change every now and then. It's also easier to notice monotony and repetition when an album has many tracks on it, as opposed to one long song. You can't criticize this album for its songs sounding the same, because, well... it's one song, obviously. On the other hand, your musical ideas need to feel well connected or the one track thing becomes just a gimmick, but IMO the advantages of writing a single song album still outweigh the difficulties.
Recording, producing and especially performing such an album is a different story, of course. Anyway, I think this is one of the more overrated albums here on MS. It's got its moments and I enjoy the overall experience of listening to it, but it's not a masterpiece in my ears.

Agreed. This would have worked better as a 40 min song like Crimson and Winter's Gate IMO.
Good but not as outstanding as the rating suggests.

I've finally managed to listen to the whole album in one sitting, it's very impressive to say the least. The melodies throughout are wonderful, the lyrics are meaningful, sorrowful and well thought of, the riffs are outstanding, and the solo's are almost David Gilmour standards, and it's importantly not overproduced. It's quite genius really how much thought and emotion has gone into this, aswel as the skillfully crafted musicianship.
I don't usually like single songs that last more than 30 minutes, let alone a full hour, but this is clearly an exception, it's rather a gripping journey than just a song. There are a few moments throughout the song that didn't quite sit with me, and I wasn't keen on how the tempo abruptly ends in some sections, so for me there wasn't a perfect flow, other than that there's parts close to perfection.
