A year after releasing the colossal, genre-spanning triple album Triangle, Schammasch delved deeper into one of the more unexpected sounds of that album with the EP The Maldoror Chants: Hermaphrodite. Seven years on, they revisit Les Chants De Maldoror, and in the process display some more novel interpretations of their style.

Schammasch is one of my fave bands but this does not click with me. Need more listens.

I’m not feeling this at all tbh, same with the first single.

Three tracks in and I'm still waiting for this album to start. Boring. Unimaginative.

The music is good enough but the vocals are pretty sub-par. Probably won't revisit this.
I can't remember if this was always the case but then I haven't listened to this band in five or six years.

People have voiced issue with the harsh vocals in the past, which I never really understood as they didn't sound much better or worse than the usual standard; this particularly type of gothicky clean vocal is more prominent on this album than previously (appeared on one song on their last album, but otherwise their clean vocals were typically a bit more [edit: group] chanting)

Now that you mention it, I do remember those discussions about the harsh vocals. I didn't have a problem with them back in the Contradiction and Triangle days but wasn't in love with them either. You're right that they aren't much better or worse than the standard, but these days I find most harsh vocals pretty unappealing.

However, I was mostly referring to the clean vocals in my previous comment. I do seem to recall more chant-like vocals on previous albums, which didn't bother me as much.

Well, this is disappointing for me so far ..... But I'll give it another chance, maybe it will need more listens, but for now, nothing much.

More of an atmospheric slow burn than a rocker, but I'm really enjoying it. For the most part.

I don't understand why you do such a poor review of this album when it is perfect in terms of production, sound and ideas

Call me a fanboy but I love the album. The band is ahead of other bands in terms of atmosphere and compositions. The only downside I can think of are the vocals, both cleans and harsh, but I got used to them. Solid 8/10 stuff.

This is a unique band and stop whining about the vocals!!! Why didn't you say that about Be'lakor's mediocre last album?! And there vocals are terrible, but here they are unique. Everyone is free to listen or not! Don't listen to that, you haters!!!😳🙈😴

You don't need to be a hater to criticize a piece of art. You evidently gave it a score of 8 which indicates that you have certain criticisms yourself. The Be'lakor reference is also pretty weird!

I haven't had the chance to give this album a thorough listen but my first impression is better than the disappointment of the released singels.

If I had to choose the reference band taking into account musical and vocal development that would be Secrets Of The Moon and definitely not Be'lakor lol

Loved it. Melancholic, melodic, dark, a little less black-metal-ish than their previous work. There is nothing groundbreaking or awe-inspiring moments, but it's definitely a very pleasant listen. Solid album.

I never quite know what to expect from this band they're one of the most unique bands out there, but I have to admit this album is a lot better than I had anticipated. It reminds me very much of Mephorash's latest, it's very diversely structured, darkly atmospheric, has excellent drumming and some remarkable riff melodies. The vocals might be hit and miss to some but I don't find them too much of an issue.

not a bad album, just flat and uninteresting. two back to back listens and already forgot it.
as far as the band goes, not sure they have it anymore. at least they gave us two incredible records.
