At a time when the Swedish death metal scene was preparing for the soon to emerge Gothenburg metal, the largely overlooked death metal band Cemetary found themselves on a path from the raw death metal played on their debut to gothic metal, which will be found on their later albums. Godless Beauty is their transition album on this path. It is more melodic and not as raw as the debut, yet it still exhibits the death metal grounds from where they started and which would mostly vanish already with the succeeding album. This is their opus magnum. It is one of the most overlooked death metal albums from that era. And it has been released 30 years ago. We haven't seen any new albums from this band during the last 18 years. But they seem to be back in the studios and early this year they announced a new album. While we certainly cannot expect another Godless Beauty to come, it would be nice to at least see a transition back to where they came from.

Great and very overlooked depressive death metal with great songs and (not too catchy) melodies.

Indeed, very overlooked! This band in general, I would say.
They have other great albums (Sundown and in particular Black vanity come to mind).
But GB is clearly their best. It also doesnt compare much to the other two mentioned, its much faster and darker.
What I like most with this album is that it is so consistent, from beginning to end. There are no weak songs here, all excellent.
My highlight: Adrift In Scarlet Twilight, Where The Fire Forever Burns, and my fav is And Julie is no more (this one is so intense).

Definately one of the most overlooked albums of all time. I wouldn't call this plain, generic death metal, though. It has plenty of gothic, doom and even some power metal influences.
It's hard to pinpoint any fillers on this album, every single track is far beyond mediocrity.
My favorite songs are "And Julie Is No More", "Now She Walks The Shadows" and "The Serpent's Kiss", but "By My Own Hand", "Adrift In Scarlet Twilight" and "Where The Fire Forever Burns" stand out as amazing, timeless highlights.

I thought the two primary purposes for the internet were cat memes and overreactions.
