At arout 3:25 on A Suburb To Hell, is he using something to alter his voice, or can he do that himself?

Can't believe this album is rated so low, I consider this one a classic Death Metal album, probably one of the best albums of the whole Swedish Death metal movement. Really, I'm in awe...

I don't think so. And I am willing to bet that they became fans of the band at earliest with Theli.

Beyond Sanctorium's the earliest one I gave a good rating to. I'm not much of a death metal fan.

Yeah, they became fans with their later works, when Therion became less good for me.
On the other hand: with the releases of Carcass, Dismember, Pungent Stench, Pestilence , Entombed, Morbid Angel (and a lot more incredible stuff) this one maybe stayed under the radar for some people

I never tried early Therion because the symphonic stuff gave me ebola. I should try their dm albums, I'm pretty sure I can't like them less than the others. I guess I'll start with this.

Start here and listen to Beyind Sanctorum as well which is also death metal although with some non-death metal elements but few enough to call it a death metal album.
You can venture with caution with Symphony Masses but after that one well... You wont like anything else. I dig a lot of Therion actually. Both old and new. Well, not NEW new. I stopped caring after Gothic Kabbalah.

Okay thanks for the tips. Might even try one of the symphonic ones. See if my mind changed with time.

Perhaps Christofer Johnsson should listen to this album again so maybe he recovers something this band lost a long time ago.

Their balls.

Aw c'mon. I'd say Beyond Sanctorum is pretty ballsy and interesting.

I admit I may have been a little harsh so I'll rephrase: Of Darkness is the best Therion album and their first three releases are the only ones worth listening to. The symphonic stuff gives me ebola, just like Ilham said.

Let's delete all symphonic metalheads from this site so the average score is somewhat accurate. Such a legendary album, especially when you realise that its one of the first swedish death metal albums ever.

Well, sort of difficult approach, and you know that. But I'll take it you are not being too serious here and just want to let us know how inferior the taste of symphonic metalheads is.

I have nothing but respect to people who enjoy symphonic metal and I did not intend to insult any of them, my point is that if you dont listen to X genre, maybe you shouldn't rate X genre albums. Kinda childish dream I know

Yeah, ongoing discussion that one.
If you ask me, everyone should vote on any album they like to vote on.
Apart from the fact that restrictions on voting allowances would be impossible to monitor properly, they would return non-desirable rating distributions imo. We would only see average ratings of very good, excellent or perfect because people tend to like the albums from the genre they listen to.
But that is my view on the topic and it implies that people mostly vote based on how much they like an album, not based on objective quality. If you want ratings based on objective quality -- again my view -- you dont need a voting system anyway, staff could just put together their heads and figure out the proper objective rating for each album.
Well, I tend to go too far on this topic easily I know...

After listening to Theli, I didn't expect this style to be the origin of this band. It's similar to other Swedish bands of that time (Entombed, Dismember), but nothing extraordinary.
Just some solid old school death metal
