Within the past couple of years, the typically rigid subgenre of death metal has seen a good few bands challenge some of its more cliché formulas and ideas, to the point of becoming quite noteworthy needles that separate from the rest of the haystack. Portal have done it, Tribulation have done it, and this year, Morbus Chron are looking to get in on the action, doing one hell of a job at it in the process.

Morbus Chron appear to want a piece of the action that Tribulation got last year with their phenomenal The Formulas of Death album. Like them, they see themselves merging an old-school aesthetic with a modern twist. Death, thrash and progressive metal is blended harmoniously with mature songwriting and superbly organic production to create superlative atmosphere.

This is quickly becoming one of my favourite albums of any genre.

And yes after listening to this nonstop for the last month, I definitely hear early AtG in this. Not in very obvious ways but the songwriting is very similiar.
Oh god, why are dm albums like this so rare.

To me, this sounds like Hail Spirit Noir, but without the keys. That being said, I was bored to death at the end of it.

Not my cup of tea.

I couldn't have imagine anyone saying that.

Not sure I feel the HSN vibe myself to be honest. Granted, I spent much less time with Oi Magoi than this but I still don't think the two have much in common.

It just took me 8 months to realize their name comes from a quite shitty disease. I feel awful because I should have recognize it way earlier since it's a bit relevant to my studies. It sounds cool but their music feels like it needs a less cliche band name but that's just me. Everything is cliche anyways.

EDIT: Upon repeated listens I've grown to like this album quite a bit more. Favorite tracks: Towards a Dark Sky, The Perennial Link, Terminus.

At last finished with 4th spin.

A very interesting record with moments you just want to cut copy and play it on reptitive mode. Lot of stuff has been mixed in with awesome flow of prog just made me curious as it'll beat Horrendous's latest(probably my favorite DM of 2014). It was close but did not beat the beauty of latest Horrendous.

More or less, both releases have been fucking awesome. My ears will be waiting horribly to listen Morbus Chron and Horrendous new albums again.

Been listening to this one a lot of late. Sad to hear via their Facebook page that they've called it quits. Metal doesn't have enough really unique voices like these guys.

Gave this baby some very limited attention when it came out. So, yeah... It's still an astonishing album. I might prefer it over Tribulation's Formulas Of Death. "It Stretches In The Hollow" in particular, what a track.
