The Best Doom Metal Album Of 2017

I have been following Paradise Lost since the Frozen Illusion demo back when there was no internet and we had to rely on scarce metal radio shows and MTV's "Headbangers Ball" for our fix of new music. The band has tried its hand at death, doom, gothic and even electronic styles, but since In Requiem they have been gradually returning to their roots with every release. Medusa is another sample of greatness in a nearly thirty-year-old, more-than-remarkable career.

Dom Lawson from Metal Hammer says Medusa is possibly even better than The Plague Within. If this is true... Good fucking Lord...

Only listened to this once but I can say it's like a death/doom version of Type O Negative. Sexy stuff.

This is a quality release and its good to see them so wholeheartedly embracing their roots and going for such an extreme sound... and yet, I feel somehow let down. The pure death doom tracks are good but not quite as good as something from the likes of Mourning Beloveth. I find myself missing the wider range of Plague Within. Either way, certainly worth hearing and owning a copy, but leaves me unsatisfied.

I agree 100% with what you said. It seems to me that they took "Beneath the Broken Earth" from the previous album and made a whole album like this song, meanwhile forgetting how varied and multi-faceted "The Plague Within" was. Such a waste and shame. "Medusa" is still a good album, but it could've been so much better.

Maybe it is too early to say but I feel this record is one of Paradise Lost's best works.

I prefer track 1,4,5,7,10 and 11 because they sound divers and melodic. The other songs sounds too monotone for me. But I think this is a good album in it's genre. The fans of the death/doom genre will love it!
I will see them anyway on their tour in Netherlands!

Maybe best band album, each of them comes out you can say so, but in some way I prefer this more as original 4 albums. Kick ass, death doom, gothic elements, litte clear and same time grunthy vocals. amazing album, maybe my second fav from 2017.

This is a huge step back from the plague within... That being said, its still a pretty good album, albeit way less inspired.

It's been a long time since I listened to The Plague Within or Tragic Idol and I haven't listened to either nearly enough to properly remember them and compare to this, but I will say that despite the lack of variety here, I really dig the sound throughout. Love the lead guitar melodies and the generally meaty feel of the album

I still can't find myself enjoying this one as much as The Plague Within, but then again, I haven't listened Medusa as much times as The Plague Within.

Disappointing album, I expected much better based on the comments, scores, and reviews. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't even feel like giving it another listen tbh.

Yeah, I also thought the bonus tracks were better than anything on the album, strangely enough.
