It's not really pushing the boundaries much from their last album, but it's still great.

I'm so glad we can depend on this band again. I always loved Heathenreel, but until The Pagan Manifesto came out, this band was kind of a one album wonder for me. Not that the other albums were bad, but they just weren't on the same level. While TPM had stronger highlights, with Witches Gather as their absolute best song yet, this album feels more consistent and progressive. There's a lot of variety here and lots of details to discover, so it took me nearly 20 listens to fully absorb everything. I hope they manage to stay on this level on the next albums.

It's not as good as The Pagan Manifesto, but then again that can be said about most albums by most bands.

Secrets Of The Magick Grimoire is fantastic in its own right, leading you through the wondrous, energetic, and sometimes evil passages of its many chapters. It took several listens, but every song that I didn't like at first has grown on me (over only the course of a week) and I am thoroughly enjoying every subsequent listen more and more. This is a more consistent release than The Pagan Manifesto in terms of songwriting but it still has a lot of variety. There are a lot of unneeded key and time changes in this album, some that work and some that don't, which rubbed me the wrong way at first but I think that is my only real criticism of this album and that's more of a personal taste thing anyway. With Secrets Of The Magick Grimoire and The Pagan Manifesto, Elvenking is making most other bands look bad, especially other folk metal bands. This album is full of passion and vigor which carry through its entire run. It's rare to see a band that has been around for 20 years put out an album that doesn't feel like you have to make some sort of compromise to enjoy it. It's even rarer for a band that has been around this long to seem like they have entered their golden age.
