A total improvement over the debut which was good yet easily forgettable. An album for the ages.

Closing of #4 track is absolutely delicious.

Probably BM album of the year? It is for me.

It seems I'm in the minority. I really don't like this album. The songs feel like they have no structure to me. Just one spastic riff after another on top of poor drum production.

My only saving grace is that 60% of the time Troy agrees with me every time.

Honestly I didn't expect to agree with you, especially after reading Radu's review and seeing the comments here, but I think I'd rate this about the same as you. I listened to it just tonight and might try it again later this week (its re-visit has been bumped down to make way for other stuff I intend to catch up with) but I doubt I'll budge on my initial reaction.

I wouldn't agree with the spastic riff critique, though. I think, though unusual in their delivery, the riffs are purposeful and fit within the seemingly primitive, aggressive theme of the album. I felt like I understood the concept of the album and its intent, but just couldn't get myself in the right headspace to appreciate it beyond the evolving riff patterns and raw atmosphere of nostalgia. I can get in that space with Darkthrone, but not with this project. Although it could be it just needs to be consumed with some smooth red wine.

I definitely agree with your last statements. I can appreciate what this album is trying to do, and I can understand why people like it, but I find it's lacking direction, especially with the long tracks. I also find the production is pretty linear and flat as well. The drum production is especially appalling. The snare sound is terrible and the cymbals wash into themselves, is there even a bass drum?

What I do like, are the "heavy metal" ideas behind this. The short solos and riffs and occasional heavy metal style drum fills are cool. It just doesn't mesh well with the black metal and long track lengths. If they stuck with more of an "evil heavy metal" style for the whole record, I would like it much more.
