Ignorant westerner here, what are the benefits/cons of joining the EU?

I mean, you could say it went well DESPITE the alleged meddling. There's probably no statistic to back this up but I wouldn't be surprised if more people are in favor of joining the EU than actually voted.

Still, specially knowing corruption.
