Anthrax - To Release Covers EP In September (Update)
US thrashers Anthrax are planning to issue a special EP of cover songs in September to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the release of the band's latest album, Worship Music.
During a recent interview, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante told Loudwire that the band is working on an EP of cover songs. The upcoming work will pay tribute to some of Anthrax's favorite bands ? more specifically, bands from the 1970s.
"To commemorate the first year of Worship Music being out, we're putting together a little companion EP with some fun s-t on it," says Benante. "It started out as what I call 'The '70s EP.' It's made up of some cover songs from our favorite bands ? consisting of Rush, Thin Lizzy, Boston, Journey... We're still working on it now, but I think it's gonna be really cool."
The following covers are expected to appear on the forthcoming EP:
- AC/DC - T.N.T.
- Boston - Smoking
- Journey - Keep On Running
- Rush - Anthem
Anthrax also recorded a cover version of Black Sabbath's classic song "Neon Knights" for inclusion on the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio.
UPDATE: After Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante said the band would release a covers EP in September, Scott Ian has now told VH1 Classic Radio that the band is not working on a covers EP and that Anthrax always records cover songs when they get bored during the tracking of their material: "We're not working on a covers album. It's not at all what we're doing. We just always record cover songs. They just happen when we're in the studio or when we're touring, we get bored of jamming on our own songs at sound check so you end up jamming on cover songs and eventually we'll end up recording them and eventually, somehow, they end up getting released in some way, shape or form as B-sides, but we're definitely not working on a covers album."
Maybe another bandmember will come forward and clarify this for us as it is not clear anymore what is happening. It seems like we have to wait and see if something does come out of this.
