Before hearing the 'Nemo' single, I was looking forward to this new album of Nightwish (one of my favourite bands by the way). After hearing this single I was even more looking forward to the full-length. After listening to Once a good dozen times, I realize I was so better-off before. I hate saying that, like almost all the fans it twists my bowels to criticize Nightwish, but Once is to me terribly disappointing. Maybe I've heard too much about it, about the use of an orchestra, about the heavier riffs, Tarja's best performance ever?

I would say that this is something as uncommon as a perfect (when it comes to rating) album with flaws! I used to claim that every perfect album needs to have unity, and be totally free of any letdown songs/flaws. And Once, plus a handful other albums, are the exceptions to the rule of mine.

Nightwish are one of the most professional bands out there. When I listen to 'Once', I can't find any flaws at all in the musicianship. All the good songs are perfectly completed compositions and their lyrics are tastefull and interesting. The choirs and orchestra are perfectly blended with the really Heavy Metal riffs and drums, and the piano/keyboard pieces are great. Toumas is probably the reincarnation of Mozart and I would guess that his father is Howard Shore or Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is soundtrack metal at it's finest. Since I love cheesy epic soundtracks, this of course appeals to me!

This is the best noghwish album ever.ALL IS FIT IN VERY NICE FROM TARJA VOCAL,TO ORCHESTRA AND EXOTIC EMPUUS GUITAR RIFFS.I MISS TARJA VERY MUCH.IT IS NOT SAME NIGHTWISH,THE BEND HAD LOST ITS PASSION AND IDENTITY WITHOUT HER,BUT TUOMAS TALENT IS HUGE AND UNDENIABLE.

Fantastic song, and I agree that it's their best album (although I personally don't care for any of their other releases). This was one of the first memorable metal albums I remember buying and liking.

God, how I hate this album. Not because I think it ain't good (and however I've heard way worse albums), but just for the fact that there is an incredible suite ("Ghost Love Score") among vapid/cheesy songs... What a shame.

Wait, why did you, if you don't think it ain't good, rate it 5, aka "not good"?

I think you misunderstood: first of all, in my opinion this album isn't good. And I don't hate it because of its actual mediocrity, but because there is the best Nightwish song (and now that I think of it, also a good one, "Dark Chest Of Wonders") among other 9-10 meh tracks.
Got the picture?

I still remember watching the Runescape Falador Massacre video, which had Planet Hell as the song playing. An important song in my development towards becoming the annoying kid who talks to much about Overkill that you see today.

Dam dont know wat took me so long to check these guys out properly. prolly their current singer/music... anyway fantastic album and a symphonic metal masterpiece! ive only listened to it once and already almost every song was a standout song and unique but still maintaining the overall album style.(besides the end of the ghost love? one, that was a lil out of the box but i still enjoyed it) cant wait to re listen and check out the other Tarja albums.

'century child' paved the way for mainstream success, but i guess it was 'once' that really did show off nightwish's penchant for catchy tunes. A couple of weaker tracks here, 'I wish i had an angel' and 'Dark Gardens', but with songs like 'ghost love score' and 'higher than hope' it more than makes up for it.

For sure, buddy, absolutely killer album!

I even liked Dark Passion Play to be honest. Even for those that don't like Anette, the bombastic symphonies and exemplary songwriting are still present.

This is where my path with Nightwish pretty much ended. Younger fans don't even understand how hyped up Once was when it was released. Until this they had made two masterpieces and two great albums, in Finland they were now bigger than life itself and it was announced that songs from this album would be played in some major Hollywood flick (which turned out to be an Uwe Boll film. lol). This thing was destined to sell like crazy. And it sure did.

But yeah. This is where they pretty much commercialized their sound and cut the power metal awesomeness for good. Now it's all about utilizing a real symphonic orchestra and massive production values, but at the cost of any form of intensity. I remember being hugely disappointed with this one, none of the songs hit me like they should. They were epic, for sure, but they sounded so damn hollow and empty at this point. The song that really, really, REALLY pissed and turned me off was "Wish I Had an Angel" which is pretty much a techno song played with metal instruments. I still think that is the lowest point of their entire career musically.

You've got a lot of guts. Let's see what they look like!
