Holy fuck. This album kicks serious ass.

Going through my first listen, and this is seriously mindblowing!

Crazy album. A bit alienating and over-indulgent, but impressive all the same.

I confused this band for the other Shining(who apparently are from Sweden)

This album kind of pisses me off and is a thoroughly great listen at the same time. I think they succeeded!

Bleuargh. This isn't fair. They are being CHEATED by not being on that list. They certainly made MY favourite album of the year.

Pretty cool album. Does anyone know how does this compare to their 2007 output?

It's because the band was made visible or else it would already have been there before

then you should have seen them live together with Enslaved playing The Armageddon Concerto which the two bands specifically wrote for Roadburn last year. Thaat one totally got on my nerves and made Blackjazz seem as super chilled easy listening

Sure. This album, whatever its position in the 2010 top 20, will be one of my fav releases from last year

The more I listen to this, the more I see the genius. Can't wait to see these guys at Wacken!

I heard this record after i got Ihsahn's After. I like avangarde metal, but i found most of the songs unlistenable and just a show of sound distortion.
On the upside, they are really original and put a lot of crazy ideas here; but nothing that makes me want to listen to it again.
I rated a 7 just because HEALTER SKELTER was amazing and the cover from king crimson was great too.

It's not a THING like Ihsahn's After. Even the saxophone bits are very different in Ihsahn and Shining. Ihsahn's album was primarily song based, and apart from tunes like The Madness and the Damage Done, Fisheye and Blackjazz Deathtrance, there isn't much that is song-based and standing alone. So I think people should be listening to it without preconceived notions.
Unlistenable and a show of sound distortion? Maybe, to some. It is a little indulgent in areas. But...you can clearly hear all these genres amalgamated for this collective product. I think there's more depth that takes a NUMBER of listens to really devour. I'm still picking up subtleties on my...49th listen.
I think people SHOULD be listening to it again...especially the guy who posted above. It's by NO MEANS song-based; it really is this cohesive framework of sound distortion with shifting atmospheres and experiments. In other words, the album really plays as a whole extremely well. If you focus on any song in particular, of course you may not enjoy it on its own. It IS a concept album, of course. Even if you don't end up enjoying it as much as I do, it is an album that will truly change the way you think about metal music (Not many bands can have Devin Townsend, Blood Stain Child, industrial, even catchy Kyuss-kinda riffs on the same record amalgamated with jazz, black metal vocals and crazy trance).
And whoever rated it a 1...FAILS.

I liked it but it didn't leave much of an impoession on me. I might have to listen to it a good bit more.

Weirdass album, which totally makes it awesome by the way..."Exit Sun Pt.1" reminds me a little of Muse's "Hysteria"...

The brilliance of this thing is the way it simply makes people think about what metal really is, and where it can go from here. It is a landmark release, whether people like it or not. I hope to see a lot of other bands being this gutsy in the future, and I can't wait to hear Shining performing these tracks at Wacken in 2011.

Amazing, i can see these guys going far in there career, some really great talent!
