So Sunn O))) seem to have been taking a liking to collaborations as of late. This in itself is not a bad thing, as Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley have already proven themselves as versatile musicians capable of adapting their sound on multiple occasions. This time around, however, the duo chose to work with Avantgarde musician Scott Walker, the results of which were unfortunately a bit like mixing oil with water. Read more ›› |

Baritone dramatic singing over the usual Sunn O))) drone + industrial-like sound effects like hammers on metal pipes, etc. The video is nice as well, I don't know who did it, but it looks like modern Jan Svankmajer. I can't tell you more; it was just a 1'50" long video.

Yes yes.... I'm loving the fact that it sounds more Sunn O))) than last couple of works and the vocals work wonders.

I thoroughly disliked that sample. To be honest I've never heard any of Scott Walker's material but if that's demonstrative of his voice then I won't be looking any further and don't know if I'll be able to finish this collab if there's more of that. Can't really say much about the other parts of the track really, not enough to go on.

I'm with Willy and Joe. I cannot stand anything about those vocals. If the entire album's gonna be like this, count me out. Guess I'll give Terrestrials a shot instead.

01.09.2014 - 20:55 Written by [user id=4365] on 27.08.2014 at 20:15 What's so bad about it? Deep, rich, baritone vocals, goes great with the Sunn O))) sound. Ya know, I'm starting to get firmly convinced that there's like this cult of elitism surrounding the band, bunch of people I've talked to both on site and off act as if Sunn O))) are only doing anything right if they're writing material that sounds like White1 and Black One, and the creative spectrum of O'Malley and Anderson isn't nearly so limited. Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I'd rather take this release in full from an artistic perspective of "what were they trying to accomplish here?" than just complain that it's not what I'd prefer to hear going off of a barely two minute sample.

Account deleted Written by Auntie Sahar on 01.09.2014 at 20:55 It's in your head. I don't like the vocals because I don't like the vocals, it's as simple as that. You seem to be reacting to a lot of users recently when they say they don't like something (BaN's album art, Darkspace's keyboard sound, and now this). There's no elitism involved, just people's tastes. For the record most people here seem to like the vocals. You can't expect such a divisive style to be appreciated by everyone though. It doesn't make someone less of a Sunn / O'Malley fan for not enjoying this and it's rather sanctimonious to imply otherwise. From my memory I've enjoyed everything by Sunn and what I've heard of O'Malley's work, (which is most of it seeing as I've been listening to them for nearly 10 years so I really don't need a lecture on how to listen to this and other music like it) but I'm not going to feign an interest in something that doesn't appeal to me. I'm not a blind fanboy after all. I'm happy to say when I don't like something done by a band that I love.

01.09.2014 - 21:21 Written by [user id=4365] on 01.09.2014 at 21:03 Hey man, part of the inevitable byproduct of freedom of speech is freedom to debate each others' opinions. If I think someone's being overly critical and nitpicky towards something when it's really not that big a deal in my eyes, I offer counterargument. It seems that for a good amount of people critiquing music these days takes the form of some sort of pretentious hipster-ism, some strange mentality that you appear "cooler" if you're criticizing than if you're praising (not implying this to be the case with you). I'm sure you know what I mean. It's something I've seen a lot on site lately, and it's getting quite tiring. Regarding the actual album... sure, it's divisive. I do apologize if I seemed to suggest you're not a "true" fan of the band. I was honestly surprised to see you dislike it, especially because I remember you previously saying you hope the band goes back to writing more of their own material and (at least going by the sample) the music of this does sound strongly similar to Monoliths & Dimensions, so I don't think fans of the "pure" Sunn O))) will be too disappointed. All different strokes dude, but as I think the forums here have demonstrated time and again, if someone has the right to an opinion, someone else has the right to tear the shit out of it ![]()

Account deleted Written by Auntie Sahar on 01.09.2014 at 21:21 It's one thing to bring someone up on their opinions, but it's another to lecture them on how to listen to music. You offer a counterpoint, you don't tell them that they're listening to the music wrong. That's stepping on people's toes. Obviously there are exceptions (deadone for example) but I don't think this is one. I really don't see this hipster, true, pure thing you speak of. I wouldn't say someone disliking the vocals, an extremely dominant aspect of the music (probably the most) is nitpicking or being overly critical. It's kind of hard to get past that if you don't like it, and no one should have to feel obligated to force themselves to like it or appreciate it because of artist intention or anything like that. A lot of people have been listening to music a long time and they know what they like and they recognise dips in quality, lulls in creativity, or when something just plain doesn't work. If they point it out then that's their business really. But as for the vocals, I love all kinds and styles, probably more than most but this is an exception. That's why I said I'd have loved if Diamanda Galas did a collab with them because she's someone who has an extremely unusual voice but one I happen to love. Scott Walker is someone with an extremely unusual voice but one I happen to loathe. It's just that. Certainly not trying to appear cool and I suspect most other people have have complaints on various things are not saying it to be cool either.

01.09.2014 - 21:51 Written by [user id=4365] on 01.09.2014 at 21:33 Ok man, again, I apologize. I wasn't trying to lecture, just offering a suggestion, but I guess it came across the wrong way. I'm much more the type to go into an album from the point of view of "what point are these guys looking to get across?" rather than "I hope it sounds like..." Yes, we all have our tastes that we're entitled to, but I've found over the years that the more expectations you go into an album with, the more disappointment you're likely to receive. To me it's not so much a matter of forcing yourself to like something, it's just trying to take the music more as it is, rather than as what you'd wish it to be. I'll just end it with that, clearly we have different opinions on the issue, and while I may not agree with yours, I can certainly understand and respect them. On another point Diamanda Galas... please tell me more?
