I've noticed Japan has one of the most notable avant-garde metal scenes. Along with their neoclassical/speed/power metal scene, it seems to be their main metal scene. So, of all of these different bands, which do you consider the best? My personal favorite is Dir En Grey.

I considered making a list of the best of Japanese metal not long ago, but swiftly gave up as I realised I could barely find 20 bands worth putting on a such list. There's a lot to love about Japan but their metal is not the best.

Of the ones in the list Sigh take easy victory, with Boris coming second seeing as they haven't made a good record in 10 years or so.

I agree and I hope Sabbat will split up, (no UK can live forever) Japenese ... and well Jap metal is better as anime and those weird cartoon characters IMO
I hardly can name Jap bands, I did listen those in the past, and there was some stoner doom band what use song titles some serial killer names

Sabbat gave us The Dwelling which is easily one of the best albums to come out of that country can't speak for much of their other stuff though.

Well even Blood Stain Child made into the list

Answering the topic: those bands are so different, it's hard to compare. I like Sigh a lot... And Blood Stain Child. And Gallhammer. And Babymetal.

Gallhammer experimental?
That's like calling Hellhammer experimental.

The closest Gallhammer ever got to being experimental was the last track on The End. And it's not very experimental, anyway. Maybe it's because they're the first band to employ a pokemon as a drummer?
Don't know how Blood Stain Child are experimental, either. The electro/metal mix has been done before.

As a symphonic/power genrehound, I never really go in for "cutting-edge" bands, but I do have a grudging respect for Dir En Grey.

Wasn't aware GazettE qualified as metal, though...

Maybe you just weren't looking hard enough.

That said, I agree the Japanese scene does churn out its fair share of dreck.

I should probably listen to some more Sigh, I've been meaning to listen to Gallows Gallery for some time now. Still, from what I've heard I prefer Dir En Grey.

Gallhammer experimental?
That's like calling Hellhammer experimental.

I wasn't sure whether to include them or not as they really aren't an experimental band, just a very extreme and raw one, but in the end I decided to put them in instead of Melt Banana as they are actually a metal band. On a side note, to a small extent Hellhammer was experimental, and of course Celtic Frost much more so.

Written by M C Vice on 25.01.2015 at 02:30

Don't know how Blood Stain Child are experimental, either. The electro/metal mix has been done before.

Pretty sure they were one of the pioneers of trance metal specifically, and they fit with the other Japanese bands which mix extreme metal with pop, that's why they are here. I was a bit hesitant to put them in as well, but google says they are an experimental metal band, and that's more than I can say for Gallhammer.

Depends on the song. Haven't heard much from them, but I've heard stuff which definitely qualifies as metal, and stuff which definitely isn't metal. Regardless, I'd say they belong in the same category as Dir En Grey and Maximum the Hormone.
