Nothing I would put in the record player today, but I remember "borrowing" this from from a friend of mines older brother. Pretty hardcore stuff for a couple of boys at the age of 10! Probably one of the bands that got me into metal.

Ice T has said many times, that the song was a protest song, and was only directed at corrupt cops, and cops who engage in police brutality. It was not directed at all cops, but many people, including you it would seem, completely misinterpreted the real meaning behind the song.

I don't think LJ is being nearly as serious as you're taking him... most of his comments are done in a sarcastic or mocking tone and generally seem to be for the sake of humor rather than stating his honest opinion.

It's a bit of both, really. I was being sarcastic and obnoxious while I was taking shots at Ice T for making "Cop Killer", but at the same time, making a song with that title and then, much later, starring in a cop show is hypocritical. I understand that his message is directed at the obvious corruption within not only American but police forces internationally, but on top of loving metal, I love hip hop as well and I'm not the only one that finds this ridiculous.

Well, I generally dislike the lyrics in gangsta rap anyway, because of the way they glamorize gang culture, as well them regularly being very misogynistic. It's using shock value to make it seem "edgy" and "cool", particularly to young people. Most gangsta rappers who achieve a certain degree of success, are no worse than Ice T. Rapping about a life which they no longer live, because provocative lyrics are a selling point to young people trying to appear "street".

Ice T raps about a life he once lived, not the life he currently lives. But is that really any different to the vast majority of gangsta rappers who achieve a certain degree of success? I'd say not. But at least Ice is upfront about that fact, although this is a fact that most young fans will be completely oblivious to. How many fans will have seen or read about him saying that "Cop Killer" is not meant to be taken as an attack on all cops? Not many, probably. Ice never pretended to still be living the gangsta life, and he was making rap like that before the genre became hugely popular, due to him being one of the pioneers of it. That gives him a degree of integrity which can't be applied to many of the gangsta acts who he helped to inspire.

And yep, this site is good for this kind of debate. hehe

If you wanna listen to gangsta shit where the gang lifestyle is the primary focus, there is an entire genre dedicated to that. And that's because the people making that music, are either legit gangstas or they're trying to make money from that image.

On the other hand, if you don't wanna hear all that noise about exploiting women, doing drugs or killing people, there are many different artists that make that kind of music. You can find metal music that advocates murder, rape, violence and all kinds of debauchery. It's the same with hip hop.

Of course, but I don't listen to any metal bands which advocates those things. Cannibal Corpse for example, have stated countless times over the years that they don't condone real life violence, and that their lyrics are meant to be taken as pure horror fiction. So they are not advocates for real life violence.

There are some very "underground" gore bands, who's lyrical focus is almost entirely based on violence towards women, so I wouldn't be a fan of such bands, although they usually make terrible music anyway, so I'm not missing out on much there. lol

This album was placed No.2 on the chart of Metal Hammer's Top 10 albums of the month in 1992 (If I am not mistaken The Almighty's album was No.1). Those days Metal Hammer was so good...

Police Brutality still frequenly happens in US (there was a new case last week).
That made this album so... timeless !

OMG Ice T waist all his life whit hip hop...this music is great, HM, ballad elements, deep ideas, lyrics about street life .... much better music as some manowar copy bands ... seems to find real music you need dig it up , because media hides
and also message, you skin color don't say what music you must listen , fuck racism into music and generally

This is NOT nu-metal. This is an entirely different beast.

To me, it is a legendary album. This is different metal, but still songs like Body Count's In The House,Body Count, The Winner Loses,There Goes The Neighborhood and Cop Killer are just plain fun, even if you don't agree with their ideas. If this site was up in 1992, one can only guess how much higher it was rated.

Can we get a count on how many times they say "Body Count" in this album?

Cheesy and has B-movie sensibilities in the best way possible.

Historic it certainly is.
I can still remember very well the time when this album was released and Cop Killer was played everwhere.
We all were digging this album.
And it was a special one in particular for the blend of genres, new approach.
Back at the time we called this Hardcore or just Crossover. I dont see much Punk here though.
Last spin must have been 4-5 years ago -- I was pretty underwhelmed if I recall correctly.
Thus I am not giving it another spin right now, though my hand is trembling somewhat I have to admit...

Kind of meh songs, lyrics and message seems superior to the music itself and the vocals are good. The Winner Loses and Cop Killer are the best songs.

I am sure that "frequent police brutality" is just a lie and manipulation mostly made by left side of political scene. Sure, it happens from time to time that individual cop will abuse his powers but it is not a general problem of the police. Especially If you consider how many crimes in USA blacks commit everyday,

I also remember it from the early 90's. It was definitely something fresh to my ears. Something that stuck in back of my head that time and never lost during all these years...
That fusion (or crossover) of rap and metal is still holding quite strong and it is quite catchy.
