This thread is dedicated to the 80's Thrash metal scene, primarily underdog groups. This thread isn't meant to decide who the greatest thrash group was or is. Just to talk about bands you are interested in,what albums you consider to be classics, and so forth.A very unnapreciated group with one of THE greatest thrash albums ever released is Dark Angel,"Darkness Descends" was an instant favorite when I heard the opening riff for the first song. One other group I really enjoy is from the late 80's,went by the name of Evildead, they were among the few that had originality in their music at the time, they weren't just another Thrash group.I have only heard their debut "Annihilation Of Civilization",but "Underworld" is also a classic from what i've heard.Viking,Sacred Reich, Whiplash, and Exciter also kick ass.

One band that is one of my favorites of all time is D.R.I., they first started out as a strict hardcore punk band, but then crossed over into the thrash metal genre and they did it most excellently. Every album that they released is pure thrash. Not alot of people know about them, but definatly worth checking out.

A list of my 80's thrash favorites:

Destruction
Slayer
Exodus
Testament
Sodom
Sepultura
Dark Angel
Deathrow
Sacrifice

Death and Possessed, as well as Celtic Frost if you count them as thrash - some do others say death-metal, but whatever.

I also like DRI a ton. Crypic Slaughter, Excel, Agnostic Front, Suicidal Tendencies, etc. are some other fringe thrash/punk bands that are worth checking out.

I listened to a lot of thrash in the 80's (who didn't) and my favourites where Sodom, Destruction and Kreator. I know they are all german but I feel that the german scene is a bit underrated. Not that there's anything wrong with Slayer, Exodus and the other american acts but I prefer the germans. Thoughts?

Thoughts?

The Teutonic scene is vastly superior to TB4 if you ask me. And it's unfortunate how apparently underrated bands like Sodom are.

I wouldn't say the German scene is underrated. Kreator and Sodom got the attention they deserved, as for Destruction, maybe a bit underrated.
Btw, I also prefer German thrash.

As for German thrash, there were some decent bands that are now forgotten, like Vendetta or Assassin. The big German trio though, that's another story.

Destruction had some BRILIIANT songs with fantastic riffs early in their career, e.g. "The Ritual", but their whole albums never reached a high level of quality. Maybe they should've released them less often, choosing songs more carefully?

Kreator had some classic, awesome albums like "Terrible Certainty" or "Terrible Aggression". Their first two releases are mainly crap though. I can't understand the praise that "Pleasure to Kill" is still getting from some people, not to mention impossibly sloppy and amateurish "Endless Pain".

Sodom, except for the fact that they were initially kind of part of the first wave of black metal (someone try to convince me that "In the Sign of Evil" is more thrash than black), never released an album that could be (at least to these ears) called great. "Persecution Mania" and "Agent Orange" were close, and I still like those albums, but they're miles behind American thrash.

All things considered, Germans are best at black metal and power metal. If one wants good thrash, they should look towards the US.

I've always ignored Tankard. Have seen Wehrmacht live and they were fun back in the day. Opened for Anthrax and Slayer (Megadeth, too?) in Tacoma, WA the only time I saw them. I still have Shark Attack.

A few more thrash/punk outfits that made good noise in the 80's: Adrenaline O.D. and Corrosion Of Conformity (Eye For An Eye and Animosity) are some others. Post Mortem also comes to mind.

I wouldn't refer to Artillery as a great band, but a band that released two great albums.

Their post-breakup/hiatus stuff is anything but great.

No love for By Inheritance??

Otherwise, I agree. I think their most recent two were pretty good, but I basicalliy never go back to listening to them anymore. and the vocals on B.A.C.K. make it unlistenable for me.

And it's the worst of their first three although still enjoyable but really overrated especially the side B of the album with i's filler nazareth cover.

I agree it MIGHT be overrated (only because it is regarded so high on this website, sometimes being no.1 on the charts...) but yeah, still very enjoyable. The first 3 tracks are killer!

tbh I mean overrated on MS, because everywhere else I look it gets the amount of praise it deserves (so between a 7 to 8 rating)
