I'm starting to get into the prog rock genre. Looking for some ideas of what to look at. Some bands I plan on looking into are:
Gryphon
Renaissance
The Tea Party
White Willow
Caravan
I'm not looking for the obvious Pink Floyd/Jethro Tull recommendations. I'm looking for something different.

This such a great damn catagory because it helps melt the mind. In that what I mean is it requires the listener to become enguaged in the music. It just isnt some ear noise or candy. Prog rock has always been my fav and currently it is dream Theater!

I would recommend: Camel, Steve Hackett, Focus, Caravan, The Tangent, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, PFM, Bacamarte, Grobschnitt (up to 1981, the year of their last decent album), Twelfth Night (their debut album is a masterpiece, almost as good as Marillion's Script for a Jester's Tear), Procol Harum, Eloy (especially their 70s albums), Magenta, Satellite (neo-progressive band from Poland, amazing stuff), Gazpacho, Clepsydra (really good neo-prog). The list can be long, I'll be back later.:)

Rush of course but probably an obvious choice? Anyway, I'm probably the biggest sucker for Devil Doll here (you shut up Mr. Doctor!), a band you either love or hate I guess.

One interesting and important band I forgot to mention is GONG - their 70s albums are great, a mix of psychedelia and space rock with jazz elements - incredible stuff.

My newest prog-rock discovery is Beardfish - amazing band, their music is not only complex and interesting, but also fun to listen to; they're influenced by bands such as Gentle Giant and 70s Genesis.

I skimmed through and saw no mention of Hawkwind (I may be mistaken). Hawkwind is a great prog/space rock band. Some of their good albums include Space Ritual, Warrior On The Edge Of Time, In Search Of Space.

PROGRESSIVE-ROCK FANS ARE TERRIBLE TRASH-TALKERS. BY WAYNE GLADSTONE - - - - "Hey, buddy, what does your continued existence have in common with the trees in Rush's 'The Trees'? Neither should be taken literally." "OK, dude. You beating the crap out of me is like Peter Gabriel doing another album with Genesis: everyone keeps talking about it, but it's never gonna happen." "When I'm done with you, you won't be able to keep track of whether it was Bruford or White that played drums on 'Heart of the Sunrise.'" "You're gonna need so many transfusions that only King Crimson will have benefited more by the influx of new blood. Seriously, don't you think it was like a whole new band when Adrian Belew joined?" "Your ass-kicking is gonna be just like 'Karn Evil 9': loud, fast, and perfected in one take ... except it won't go on for 29 minutes and 37 seconds, as it did in the original release." "Don't be alarmed by the bustle in your hedgerow, Cochise. That's just a spring clean for the May queen!" "Kickin' your ass is gonna be a lot easier than the guitar part in 'YYZ.' No joke, some of that shit's in, like, 10/8. Man, Alex Lifeson is underrated." "Get ready to look like the lead singer of Marillion. When you walk down the street, very few people will be able to recognize you."

A band i forgot to mention and listen to quite Often is Focus (from the Netherlands). The only album that is a bit disappointing is Focus con Proby - Proby is the name of the vocalist they worked with on that album - it's one of the worst vocals I've ever heard. Still, the music is really good, I can tolarate (still with some difficulty) the vocals.
